WESTERN DEMOCEAT, OHAELOTTE,', N. C. THBEE "THINGS THAT A WOMAN Woman. Great, indeed is the task assigned to - CANNOT DO. woman! Who can estimate its dignity? Hot to There are three things that a woman eannot do. I make laws, not to lead armies, not to govern em First, the cannot sharpen a lead pencil. Give her j Pires bat to form those by whom laws are made, one and see. Mark how iusrsedlv she hacks awav ' armies led and empires governed, to guard against very particle of wood from around the lead, leaving an unsupported spike of the latter, which breaks immediately on jour trying to use it. You can almost forgive the male creature his compassion ate attempt, as chucking her under the chin, he snatches it from her awkward paw, and rounds and tapers it in the most ravenous manner for durable use. I wish to hear no more on that point, be cause when I once make up my mind, "all King's men" can't change itr Well then, secondly, a woman cannot do up a bundle. She takes a whole newspaper to wrap up a row 01 pine, and a 'coil of rope to tie it, and will come undone at that. When I go shopping what 10 sometimes my nara lot to do 1 look on with the fascinating caze of a bird in the neishborhood of a magnetic serpent to watch clerks do up bun dles. How the paper falls just in the right crease; bow deftly they turn it over and tuck it under, and tie it up, and then throw it down on the coun ter as if he had done the most common place thing I it 1 J f X 1 1 11-1 . iu iue wunu, msieau 01 a aeea wnicn mignc and faith, does ask the ingenuity of "angels!" It is perfectly astonishing. Thirdly I may alude to the fact that a woman 1 11 .1 . . wiuuui carry an umoereiia; or ratner to tne very peculiar manner in wbich they perform that duly; but I won't. I scorn to turn traitor to a sex who, whatever may be their faults, are always loyal to each other. So I shall say, as I might otherwise have said, that when they unfurl the parachute alluded to, they put it right down over their noses take the middle of the sidewalk, raking off men's hats and women's bonnets as they go, and walking right into the breakfast of some unfortunate wisht with that disregard of the consequent gasp which to be understood must be felt as the offender cocks up one corner of the parachute and looks definant ly at the victim who has the effrontery to come in to the world and hazznrd the whalebone and handle of her "umberell!" No, I won't speak of anything of the kind; besides, has not a celebrated writer remarked that, when "dear woman is cross, it is only when she is sick." Let us hope he is right. We all know that it is not the cause of a man's crossness. Give him his favorite dish, and vou may dine off him afterwards if you want to. HOW OLD REED WAS CONVERTED. The New York correspondent of a Western pa per tells the following story for the benefit of some hard cases: He says he once knew a man bv the name of Reed, commonly known a.s "Oid Heed." Heed was quite notorious in his way, nnd his religious belief was that after death lie should reappear in the form of an animal, and thought he would be a horse. Now, "Old IleeJ" was a hard man, 'and was not in the habit of treating his family as a re ligious man tbould. One day after his wife had suffered his abuse as long as Humanity could en dure, she concluded to give him a brief talking to to touch him upon his religious belief. So, re solutely seating herself by his side, and looking him full in the face, while a tear-drop glistened in her eye for she was serious and thought perhaps he was correct in his faith she commenced: 'Reed, I wish to hive a serious talk with you I have something to tell you, and you must hear it. I have a duty to perfi nn, and I shall doit, and then if you are miserable hereaf ter, it will not be my fault. You believe, lieed, that when you die you will turn into some animal, and you think you will be a horve. Now, if you keep on in your pres ent course, and continue to neglect and abuse jour family, squandering your money for drink and at the gaming table, when you die you will turn into some old twelve-shilling horse, and some dir ty clam-peddlar will get you, and you will be hard worked and half-starve d, and I shall see you every day before a rickety old wagon filled with clams. Sach will be your eternity! But now, Reed, it needn't be so; your future may be a bright, a hap py one. If you will reform and turn right about And become a better, man, be kind and affection ate to your family, and treat them as a Christian should, why, when you die, you will turn into a five hundred-dollar horse, and some West-End buck will get hold of you, and give you a bushel of oats a day, rub you down with pea-straw, and have you docked and your tail set up!" lie says "Old Reed" was straight-way converted was re formed and is patiently waiting for death to in troduce him to his coveted horse-heaven, where are only "shell roads" and "two-forty" najjs with pricked ' tails. An IIeboic Mother. A little two anu-a-half the slightest taint of bodily infirmity the frail yet spotless creature, whose moral no less than physi cal being, must be derived from her; to inspire those principles to inculcate those sentiments which generations yet unborn and nations yet uncivilized will Jearn to bless; to soften firmness into mercy, and chasten honor into -efinment; to exalt generos ity into virue by a soothing care, allay the anguish of the body, and the far worse anguish of the mind, by her tenderness to disarm passion, by her purity to triumph over sense; to cheer the scholar sinking under his toil, to console the statesman for the ingratitude of a mistaken people, to com pensation for friends that are perfidious for hap piness that has passed away. Such is her voca tion The couch of the tortured suffers, the pris on of the deserted friend, the cross of the rejected Saviour these are theatres on wh ich her greatest triumphs have been achieved Such is her desti ny; to visit the forsaken, to attend the neglected when counselors betray, when justice prosecutes, when brethren and disciples flee to remain un shaken and unchanged, and to exhibit in this lower world a type of that love, pure, constant and in effable, which in another we are taught to believe the test of virtue. Blackwood's Magazine. Sterreotypino Wooden Furniture. It is said that an artist in Paris has made a discovery wbich will effect a complete revolution in the manufacture of cabinet work. He has found a means of rendering any description of wood so solt that it will receive an impression either of the most varied sculpture or the most delicate chasing. The wood is then hardened to the consistency of metal, while the impressions remain perfect. The artist has already completed some splendid sculp tured articles, such as picture-frames, inkstands, chests and liquor stands With the introduction of this new art, it is expected that articles of household furniture will be considerably reduced in price. From and after this day (1st of January, 1861,) we will he pleased to sell our old friends and customers, and the rest of mankind, for cati, and cash only, any article in our line of business that we may have on hand. The first words the child spoke after the mother had caught it in the well were, "mother don't cry we will get out yet." Thk Language of Nature. Could we but make language express the beautiful imaces of Nature, how eloquent we should be! Could we trace in words the exquisite tint of the flower, or the sparkling of the rippling wave: the majestic leauty of the forest, or the graceful interminglins of light and shade; the grandure of the hoarv cliff. or the loveliness of the laughing plain; the joy- ousness ot the sunshine, or the tranquility of the twilight gloom, the terror of the storm, or the -mildness of the5 evening breeze!
