THAN WEALTH. "Helen, don't you wish you were that little girl riding la the grand carriage?" said little Sarah Brown to her sis, as they sat by an open window, one pleasaut summer's afternoon, watching the passers-by. "Why, Sarah?" asked Helen. "Why, Helen, don't you see her beautiful pink bonnet, and her lovt-ly white parasol? and, oh! dear, 'what a splendid Bilk dress! Helen, she must be very happy. If I had a frock just like that, and could ride in a carriage, how happy I should be!" Helen and Sarah Brown were the children, of a laborious mechanic in-humble, though very com fortable, circumstances. Mrs. Brown, who was working in the back part of the room, overheard Sarah's remarks, and to correct in the bud what might in the end become a covetous disposition, called the two children to her fide. "Sarah, my daughter, are you not happy?" said the mother. ' "Oh yes, mamma, I am very happy indeed," re plied Sarah, somewhat surprised by htr mother's question. "And yet my child, did I not hear you wishiug for articles, that you might be happy?" Sarah blushed, as she replied: "I was only thinking, mamma, that rich people, who can have everything in the world that they want, must Ce very happy." "Listen to me, Sarah, and I will tell you a fable of a rich man and try, my children, to take note of its moral. "There lived a rich man at the court of King Herod. He was lord chamberlain, and clothed himself in purple and fine linen, and lived in very great magnificence. "There came to him, from a far distant country, a friend of his youth, who had been his compan ion when he was a simple country boy, whom he had not seen for many years. "To do honor to his friend, the chamberlain made a sumptous feast, and invited all his great acquaintances. There stood upon the table a va riety of cot-tly delicacies, in gold and silver dishes and costly vases with perfumes and ointments, to gether with wine of rarest vintage. "And the rich man sat at the head of the table and was hospitable to all, and his friend who had come from a distant country, sat at his right hand. And they ate and drank, and were satisfied. "Then the stranger addressed the chamberlain of the King: "Such splendor and magnificence as youi house contains is not to be found in my coun try, far or wide," Arid he spoke highly of his tate, and pronounced him the happiest of men. "But the rich man, the kind's chamberlain, .selected an apple from a golden dish. The apple was large and beautiful; its color was yellow, streaked with red. And he took the apple ;:nd eaid: "This apple has rested on o!d and its form is very beautiful!" So he reached it to the strang er, the friend of his youth. "The friend cut the apple, and behold in its middle icon a icorm. Then the stranger cast his eyes on the chamberlain; but the lord chamberlain looked upon the ground and sighed sorrowfully. There was a worm at the heart of all his graudeur. "My children, beware of covetousness; for, as Christ Jesus has said: "A man's life consisted) not in the abundance of the things which he pos sesseth." A contented heart, a quiet conscience, a soul at peaee with i)vd these are the true sources of happiness. "And, ru w, my daughter, I want you to carry this littlo proverb in yojur heart: Contentment is better than wealth." , Mf.ssagk of the Principal Chief of the Choctaw Nation. In the Memphis Enquirer, we find the message c-f the principal chief of the Choctaw Nation to the local Legislature, convened in extraordinary session, to consider what course the nation should pursue in view of the probable dissolution of the Union. While counselling the several Indian Nations to cast their lot with the Southern States, in the event of their secession, and to send delegates to a Southern Congress, the chief advises the sending of commissioners to Washington to confer with the President of the United States, and to look after the security of their moneyed investments. In conclusion, he calls upon his countrymen to stand by their rights, and never surrender them, even though national annihilation should be the consequence of refusal to submit. The general council responded to the message of their chief by passing a series of reso lutions recognizing it to be the duty and interest of the Choctaw Nation to unite their destinies with the Southern Confederacy. As the army proceeded, many a true believer in St. Pat- rick, dropped some small coin or other in the old ! priest's box. And when it was observed that a j soldier was searching in his pockets for something to bestow, the old priest would step forward and hold his box to receive the donation. Ultimately, there came along a tall, gaunt, limber-sided, gander-looking Yankee, who, on seeing the old priest, thrust his hands to the very depths of his breeches pockets, as if in search of a dime or something of the kind. The priest, observing this movement, advanced as usual, while Johna than holding forth a greasy looking roll of paper, commenced very deliberately unfolding it. The old priest anticipated a liberal donation, and put on an air of the most exquisite satisfaction. Jona than continued to unroll piece after piece of dirty paper, until at length he found a piece of tri-twist-ed smoking tobacco. He next thrust his hand in to another pocket, and drew forth a clay pipe, which with the utmost deliberation he proceeded to fill by pinching off small particles of the tobacco. When tin's was done, having replaced his tobacco in his breeches pocket, he stooped forward and lighted his pipe by the old priest's candle, and making an a iward inclination of the head, (m- tendeu perhaps, for a bow,) he said, "Much obleg ed to ye, Squire," and proceeded on.
