Perhaps ! there was never a crop of corn grown in the Southern States more abundant than the one of this roar We have seen gentlemen from the ex- :' t.,. e.,tt. n,l tha MoiitlitFoef .! iUv rpi.rp- ' tent U :1 heiiif!- oouallv fine in 'all nlacos. If i-pd and not used in w.isfp. it is nrob- able that nearlv enough has been made to furnish ; bread enough for two years. It is on tins very that we wish to address t. few words of point caution to our readers. As a general tnni, : i Southern farmers do not study economy in dealing I out supplies of food. If they mako a great deal, 1 they consume a great deal; it they make but lit- . ' tie. thev trv to do wiih that little. To illustrate: ! .... we will ni oost that a farmer's wants, in order ,- i that he may get alemg comfortably during tne ! year, with plenty of food for man and beast, re quire that he should make two hundred barrels : of corn. If the season is a very :ood erne, his i crop may amount to 250 barrels; if dry, it may ; not average 150. In the one case be will feed ! with a very liberal hand, so that by the maturity J of the next crop his crib will have been pretty j well emptied ; in the other case, he will stint his I hordes and hogs so as to eke it out until new corn ' comes in. Under present circumstances, when the whole future is involved in so much uncertainty, ! it appears to us to be the imperative duty of every ! farmer M practice a wise economy in regard to tliis 1 mi i r important crop. 1 nere will ne a use tor every grain for one purpose or another. We shali have to raise our own supplies of pork, instead of re maining dependent on Ohio and the Northwest and to do this, will require a great amount of corn. Every farmer should also rear a few fat cattle either for home consumption or the market. In this and in other Ways that will suggest them selves to the intelligent cultivator, a profitable use may be made ef every ear of the bountiful crop with which Providence has blessed our land. xotic :n.
