Early Risers.
The recent life of Josiah Quincy has the fol
lowing good anecdote :
One day Mr John Quincy Adams, who was
addicted to the same vice of intemperate early
rising, with much the same consequences, was
visiting my father, who invited him to go into
J udge Story's lecture room, and hear his lecture
to his law class. Jiow Judge Story did not ac
cept the philosophy of his two friends iu this
particular, and would insist that it was a more
excellent way to take out one's allowance of
sleep in bed, and be wide awake when out of it
which he himself most assuredly always was.
The Judge received the two Presidents gladly,
and placed them in the seat of hc-nt r on the dais
by his side, fronting the class, and proceeded
with his lecture. It was not long before, glanc
ing his eyes aside to see how his guests were impres
sed by his doctrine, he saw that they were both
of them sound asleep, and he saw that the class
saw it too. Puusing a moment in his swift career
of speech, he pointed to the two sleeping figures,
and uttered these words of warning :
"Gentlemen, you see before you a melancholy
example of the evil effects of early rising I"
The shout of laughter with which this judicial
obiter dictum was received effectually aroused
the sleepers, audit is to be hoped they' heard
and profited by the remainder of the discourse.
Management of Grape Vines. Geonrc
Husmann, of Hermann, Mo., one of the most in
telligent grape cultivators of the country, in a
report read before the Missouri Horticultural
Society, gives several requisities for success,
founded ou extensive experience, of which the
following is the substance: 1. Complete under
drainage. 2. Moderate bearing never allowing
a vine to be overtaxed with a crop, no matter how
robust it may be. 3. Early and close Summer
pruning, for removing useless shoots. 4. Care
fully avoiding late and severe Summer pruning,
which prevents the perfecting of the fruit and
the ripening of the wood of the vine. 5. Des
truction of insects, the worst of which are the
rose bug, the leaf folder and the white thrip.

No More.
No more! it is a harp's low tone
Whispering of light and pleasure gone;
No more ! it is a broken lute,
A fading flower, with blighted root.
No more! it is a murmuring rill,
Whose waves will soon be hushed be still
Jut while they run, keep chanting low
The hymn of all things here below?
No more ! it is a severed chord ;
The breaking of a plighted word;
An echo of the pulse's beat,
Ere quiet are its hastening feet.
No more! it is a shadow fled;
A haunting thought of loved and dead;
A cloud that hovers over earth ;
A discord in each song of mirth.
No more ! it is a passing bell,
Of youth, and love, and life, the knell,
A cypress wreath; a pall; a bier;
The end of human hope and fear.

HOME PRODUCTION.
North State Washing Machine Best in Use.
Patented October lbth, 1867, by the Subscribers
ami Manufacturers, at Charlotte, Ar. C.
If you need anything of the kind, you will en
courage home industry by purchasing one of our
Machines.
It is easy to operate, occupies a small space and
does not injure articles to be washed. It is strong
and substantial, and does its work in a shoii time.
It is an actual improvement on others of similar out
side appearance.
In the North State Washing Machine the Clothes
are placed in hot suds and while thus immersed with
the air excluded, the Machine is operated, giving the
Garments a rolling, rubbing pressure, and at the
same time they receive the solvent power of the soap.
The Clothes are not impaired by the use of this
Machine. You can make money by saving the wear
and tear which your Clothes are subjected to by
washing and beating in the old way.
This Machine gives the advantage of using boiling
suds and of confining the steam. It can be worked
sitting or standing. It is cheap. The price of it
puts it within reach of nearly every family, and pays
its cost back in the saving of garments.
Try it! Try it!! lirv It!!!
