A lady residing at Mauritius, many years
ago, emancipated n slave whose good con
duct and fidelity she wished to reward-—
being in affluent cireumhlances, she gave
him with his freedom, a sum of money
which enabled him to establish himself ill
business, nnd being industrious and thrifty,
he soon became rich enough to purehase a
small estate in the country, whither he re*
tired with his family. Years passed away,
and while he was rapidly accutnulating mo*
ney, liis former mistress was sinking into
poverty, misfortune had overtaken her,
and she found herself in old age, poor, so
litary neglected, and in want of tbo com
mon comforts of life. This man heard of
her unhappy condition, and immediately
came to the town and sought her out in her
humble abode ; with the utmost respect ho
expressed his concern at finding his hon
ored lady in so reduced a st;ite ; and im-
|)lored her to come to his estate, and allow
him the gratification of providing for her
future comfort. The lady w-as much af
fected at the feeling evinced by her old ser
vant j but declin'Ml his ofler: he could not,
however, be prevailed on to relinquish his
design; “ My good mistress,” he sai»i, “o-
blige me by accepting my services; when
you were rich you were kind to nio; you
gave me freedom and money, with which
through God’s blessing I have btsen enabled
to make my.self comfortable in life, and now
I only do my fluty in asking you to sharo

the lady was conveycd, in his palanquin, to
the comfortable and well furnisheil apart
