If there aris»j iiomc vigorous shuoti^ at th» foot of a iiiullterry tree, a hole must be dug si\ or eight inches deep near each shoot, into which the shoot must bo laid without twisting it or separating it from the tree. It is then to l>e secured in its place witb crotchets of wood and covered with good mould, which must be pres.sed over it, und the end of the shoot which rises above the ground mu.st be cut o(T above th« seconi bud. It will be further necessary to placa by the side of the layer a stake to mark the place and prevent its being trodden. It mu.st likewise be watered immediately after the operation, and as often afterwarda as may lie QccPB;>ary to maintain about it a proper state of moisture. Tlic young and smooth twigs among the branche.s of the mulberry may be piissed through a liasket or vase perforated at tha bottom and filled with «arth well manured. The twig must be cut off ftiur or five inches above the vase or basket, and the mould kept in a due state of moisture by frequent Vaiorings. \\ hen a mulberry tree is well spread and the Ixxighs nearest the ground have not been lopped, some of the branches at tho di'tnnce of .six feet frona each other may be bent down and secured in the ground, so that the ends shall not rise more than six or eight inches above the .surface. All the layers made in these different ways may be %sj4)arated from the parent tree in the autumn of the second year.— They may be cut olF four inches from tho fKirent trunk, l>e taken up carefully witii their roobi and small fibres and placed in the nursery or jiermanently established in an orchard. In the nursery they may bo -sot at the distance of six feel from eacli other, and in the following year, by head, ing them down, four or five layers may bo made Irom each. By these means ona hundred trees may be increased in four years to eighteen hundred ; for the parent trees, after the layers are separated from tiiem, b;ing replactni in a.straight position, secured to a prop, manured, and watered, generally retrieve their strength, and mako productive trees. TrannpUinting for Hedges.—stand ing in the njrsery for a suitable time, tho trees may be transplanted tor making hedges- 1 prefer transplanting in the spring.— Great care should l>e taken to preserve tha \ery line roots. If hedges lor fences bo wanted the young trees may be take* from the seedlings of the last year. The white mulberry forms an eicellent live fence, and when once established, is probably tho most permanent of any other. C'attlo must not be allowed free access to tho hedge while young, as they would destroy It altogether; but after it has l>ecome a good teiKe they may approach it with ad vantage. The more it is broken and lace rated by cattle, the more impenetrable it will become; as for every branch broken, a half dozen slnK«ts w ill inimediaicly start out, till the bush forms a i>ertecl bramble. This mode is therefore recommended sis accomplishing three important ohjects—sup plying food for silk worms, keeping tho trees low, that the leaves may lie gathered from the ground by children, and furnish ing a gx>d and almost never ending fence. In tninsplanting young trees for hedges, they should not be pruned ; but the sccoud year or at least the third, the tops should i)C cut off and the side brandies trained later ally with the hedge by interweaving them. Mr. dales, the Hi nior Kditor of the Na tional Intellig»Micer, has been extremely ill for more than two weeks : at one time his physicians had but little ht>|>e of saving him, and here a rumor of his death pre vailed for a short time.
