It is erally known that a meeting uf tlie ptitpU' , was ad>‘erti9eti, to be held o»i Wi‘dnt‘»il:i\, ‘ for the purpose of discussing the doctnuo . of Xulhticatton and giving ii public expros- sioo of their opinion; but that in accor-j dance with an intimation from Mon. From the pressure of private business, many itidividuaU, who viewed tbeobjoct of the meeting, as ;>d\t‘i tis- ed. a*oi' the utmost consj'queuce in the pres ent crisis, and further, hav ing understood that the Court would adjouin at an earlier hdur than usual, to give tl»e people the h ii.'W', were by no means expectmg the mee:iui» would take place at the time, pkice oiui manner in which it did, and of course, were not answeniblc tor its organirjiion or the failure of obtaining the primary object of the meeting. It may be pr«>|>er for us to remark that, so far as we can jutlgc, the motives of thaw who anonymously ailed the meeting w^re patriotic and disinterested; that they bad such confidence in I lie en lightened public sentiment of their fellow citizens tirtit they deemed it unnecessary to prepare an address and a long tram cl n^lutions, or to even go into the usual preparation f>f providing speakers to sustain the objects for w hich tiie meeting had h i n culled, but they trusted in the iiitelliger.tf and patriotism of the people of this county, where a cause so interwoven mith their ow-n vital interests and those of every tin m- ber (>f the l'ni*o, as is that which is invol ved in »he result of the present political cri- Ri., hns never wanted advticates to diK(»cl the mists of delusion and defend tlie CLjuse of reason, of justice and rational lib‘rt\.— It was not until abftut 3 o'clock that the Court adjourned. It was «uggested that the piazxa of (len. alton’s house would affl-'rd the most el.jrible place to be heard, whither he immediately repaired, followed by a large nmss of the people. \S itliout proceeding to any kind «>f organization, he luldressed the people in a sj>eeth of about ll or ‘J hours in length.
