THE MINERS’ AND FARMERS’ JOURNAL. 1>KFKRRKD ARTK'LFX AWFI’L EARTIIQI'AKE IN SOUTH AMKRK'A. TB« crrv or rAsro dettroyed. OiM of thuM tearful couvuIsims *f Na- tura, which aonetiuits occur to make man ^1 his inpoteiica, as coraparf^d with tiie omiiipataDt power of his Creator, ocrurrrd in the mountaiDous diitrictk of New Gren ada, near the W estern frontier, and alM> nrar the i-^uator, oo the 2Utb and ‘Jv.*d of JttDuary, which has bean attended with ro- ■ults of the most terrible fatniity. The city of PaMo, with a population o' fr*m IVJ.OHU to 15,000 lahabitaato, has beon almost com- plrtely destroyed, and upwards of titH lives lost. Tb« city of Popyao, containing near SO,ODD inhabitants, has also been destrujed. The entire country, for lea|;ues around Pas- lo, has been converted into a sccne ef com plete desolation and laouming. A volcan ic iDouotaiQ overhangs the city'of Pasto, « hich IS eitoated in latitude 1, 13, N. long. 17, 11; and as the ridge of the Andes, v hicb stretches a little to the Westward, was severely al&eted, there is every reason to apprrhenid that the city of Quito and the repuUie of Equader have experienced ihe •0«cU of the same calamity. Two letters, addrcbsied to the Secretary of State, give full and melancholy details ef this appalling visitation. From them it appears that the shock was expeneoced at seven o'clock in the roormng ef the 'JOth of January, when •n awful metieu of the earth comuieoced, which continued for nearly four hours with out interruptioD, and which, on the 2‘Jd were again succeedt-d by several others still more violent; »hich completed in one cha os of destruction what parts of the city tht farmer had i^pared. t)f all the religious churches in the city only that of Jesus del Kio and that of ii^ii Andre escaped »ith the loss only of their steeples. But the Caibeiral church aud the churches consecrated to San Fraiicitwo, San S*ba.mn, Santia^ro, aith their rej^>ect- ive convents, as also those of (Santo Dotoin- gn, Marced and Monjas, were all dashed to pioces. with the exception of only three or four housc-a which have hut half escaped destruction, all the rest, both great and small, na* l with the same tate the churches and convents exporienced; and the oiualler bou'«s which remained standing were ei ther removed from their former founlations, or so unsettled, as not to be inhabited with fiafety, whence the atfrighted population were doomed to suffer the rigors of a bum- inji sun by day, never before known, and i the heavy dews by oight in a sp«l where] they asaeoibled to implore the Divine luer-1 cj far the souls of thosse whose dead b>xiics ' they had collected together. The country all around was desolate by the niclit frost and scorching tun by day. 1 iic appeuraoce of the cit), after the vi- •Icuce of the convulsion had lo some mt as- urt) subsided, is described as mont mwian- choly—preseuting nothing fwt an undistin- guiiibable mass of fall;n buildiu^'4, from which Ihe survivors were endeavoring to eiliunie the nai-ibers who had been over- waelroed. The villages in the n^'iehborhood of the f Ity of Pasto, t»a(uely, Lan^uiia, Canchalla, 'J'amonduio, I'oni/ovito, (lualmatan, Pandi- aco, a^d Tescuai, have all lost their church- e«, and ttie two fust named towns lost some of their thatcl*ed hou»e* and five of their m- babitarits. TIh» parishes of Malatuy, Yacuanquer, Tauilw, Huiaco, Funes, and their aeighbor- iDg (>arishe^. Iikewiw had their churches d'.-stro\ed, with their pUutatioas and tiled house's, but that lamentable loi'i ef life was incurred there, which befel Panto and tiie parish of Sibundoy. “ I’be CommissHjner^ appointed by the fifivernor, rejwrt, that at the right o( a lari.'*" Lako in the I)i»tnctof Siliundoy, a hm:.!l rising ground is ubi*PrveJ, which hah Govoroor to the city of Pasto, and subscrip tions tu a considerable aniouul were entered into to relieve the pressing distresses occa sioned by the calamity .—A. 1’.
