CHARLOTTE: . - MONDAY, MARCH 24, 1873. a - ' TheLf uture of the negro is shrouded in in)'stery, but glimpses of that future" excite the gravest apprehensions in the mind of the true philanthropist. It is well-known that the rising generation is growing up in idleness and vice. Very few, who were un der sixteen, in 1865 are how doing any good . at all. Negro parents, in time of slavery, exercised but little control over their ofl spring and now they exercise less. Their children have:picked up adittle smattering of learning under adventurous school marms and .carpet-bag sharpers and have too lofty ideas of their own importance to work, when they can pick up things on the sly (like loyal Congressmen) with no great risk of -detection. It matters not how "many slanders have been utftred against the former slavehold ers of the South, t is undeniable that the Kino. Cotton. We did nbi expect the New York Herald to enthrone King Cot ton again, but it has at least made the attempt. In a long and temperate arti cle on the best policy to be pursued oy the Government toward the South, it first advocates universal amnesty, and then bases an argument on the importance of the South to the prosperity ol tne wnoie country. "Were it not for the products of the Southern States," says the Herald, "the country would be hopelessly bank rupt. The cotton crop enables us to lid aidate our debts abroad as well as to pay for the vast amount of luxuries we import, and goes further that anything to create and stimulate the enormous wholesale, and retail trade which builds up New York and other cities." To leave the South a prey to robbers and specula tors, to men of bad character, from "the Northand others of equal unscrupulous ness at home, is to kill the goose that lays the golden eggs. Let us be just to the South, in effect, is the argument, and we will get great gain thereby. Chronicle and Sentinel. No wonder the loyal North was unwil ling to "let the wayward sisters, depart in peace,"', as General Scott advised. The Credit Mobilier Party: Two Vice-Presidents, three Senators, and six or seven Representatives, Chairmen of the leading committees in the House, were defiled with the , Credit ' Mobilier venality. That the present Vice-President pub lished and caused to be published a false hood in concealment of his venality, and that the late Vice-President'heaped false hood upon falsehood and then perjury upon perjury in concealment of bis ven ality, and that the three Senators and the seven members, with: but one or two ex ceptions, were likewise guilty of venality and falsehood. That the House refused to impeach the guilty officers of the Government, that the Senate refused to expel its bribed Senators, and that the! House refused to censure its bribed members. That the party organization, State or national, has done nothing to repudiate and cast out bribers orjbribees, falsifiers or perjurers. - That the party press has supported, de fended, belittled, extenuated and condon ed the offence of its leaders, utterly con demning not one of them all, except General News.
