Mr. Editor ; In the last issue of your pa per, a correspondent who styles himself " a geuuine friend of Tcmperaueo" asks " by what authority the Sons of Temperance, in their secret might sessions, legislate for the town of Charlotte?' Or, iii other words, he means to say that the Sous have no right under the existing laws to meet aud delib erate for the suppression of Intemperance in our midst. TbeSons are accustomed to persecution, but aoTft as 1 know, they have uever before bMUt'l flS?.. glEue aSt- of ttf, law against them, tor if they have no right to meet and transact busiucsa iu their own way, they are evidently violators of the law, aud consequently subject to be punished.. This gentleman, then, who says that the Sons are "prompted by the worst sort of fanaticism," is so exceedingly calm and temperate iu his opposition to bis fellow townsmen who are connected with the order that he would ar raign them every one before the bar of their Country to answer for their misdeeds! Or, if, they are permitted to escape, it is not be cause the law has no penalty to inflict, but because ihey are deluded they know 10 better. t Why docs not this "friend of Temper ance," who is presumed to be acquainted with the law, show that wc have no right to hold private meetings! Wheuevcr he docs that, it will be time enough for us to plead our cause more at length, so far as the law is concerned. Another mistake of this writer is that the Sous of Temperance are alone in this work of reform. No sir : from the very com mencement of this agitation iu our commu nity, the anti-liceD- : rucasure has num bered many of our ruH respectable Citi zens, who never could bo prevailed u;.on to become Sons, amongst its most able and most zealous supporters. And upon the no license ticket w ill be found the names of at least three men who have never aeen the inside of the Division Hoom. This "genuine friend" also labors to make the impression that his opponents deny that men have the legal right under the present law to retail liquor. It is much easier to make a man of straw and then demolish it, than successfully to assail tbe actual prin ciples upon which tbe opposcrs of the retail system base their opposition. Tbe traffic itt Ardent Spirits by the half pint or gill is note lawful. If the Temperance 1 icket should succeed, it will ere long be unlaxcful according to the laws enacted by the Legis lature of our State. Hence it will be seen that we fight under the banuer of the law the whole battle through. Cut this attempt to justify liquor sellers on the seoTe of legality is too flimsy to stand investigation. Our sapient author seems willing to admit that " this thing of selling liquor is a stutll business, and doing a great deal of barm, and no honorable man ought to engage iu it," Dut because it is lawful, be who ould try to reform public sentiment, and get the law changed, is a "loug faced fanatic. '' That is, if the law sanctions theft, h who says anything against theft is a senseless zealot ! Moreover, our Temperance Champion thinks it possible that in case licenses are withheld, "every house iu Charlotte and iu Mecklenburg may become a regular grog shop ;" but be Hccms to think this possi bility has not Urttojort existed ! Who ever heard of a rrgulur grog-hhop before? And if the prevalence of no license princi ples in Charlotte is to let forth such a flood of Spirituous liquors here, bow is this to in crease the demand in the rest of Mecklen burg County! ODe would think that every body would come to the fountain head aud drink, and that there would be no further use for country grog-shops in our glorious old Mecklenburg. Our friend thinks that if a man has the chance of buying liquor both by the quart and by the small that he is not in much dan ger of getting drunk, but if he only has the opportunity of buying by the quart, why then it is a gone case. 'J hat is he is more likely to fall by one chance, thai; he is by that same, chance (purchasing by the quart) and another chance (" purchasing by retail ) superadded. Or, a " sinking vessel " is more likely to sink with both " worm holes" and "other holes much larger," than it is if it has only the large holes '. Hut let our sa gacious co-laborer (?) dismiss his fears. The ship of good morals will not ultimately sink. We intend to stop the " worm holes ' now, and, as soon as we can get at them, we in tend to stop the " much larger ' ones and then the gallant vci;! wil!. for aes to come. ro,i ea,oftiu(;a A ?..,,, ... . . k ;,:ijiiviiiaM iii '.rut s- " 'i rsi'S ii'i.
