RAILWAY 11REAK3.
A few accidents having recently 6ccurred
on the F.nglUb Railroads, considerable at

t'f nome means to prevent their recurrence.
A trial lias alrtady been made of a new pa

mention ;
" The chief features of the patent i a

van at the rear, aud is connected with each
separate break, Ro that it is in the power of
any of the railway servants in charge cf the
train, from the driver himself to tbe guard
behind, to apply the whole of the breaks
with which a train may be furnished at once,
and iu au instant. The difference of height
on the carriages, or if the train be curved,

" I'M! As.NtX ITION OK THE S.VNUWICIl Isl.l.SUS.
The beauty of the federative system ol liuvtrn
iiient is sotin tu be illustrated in the queslmn ot
the anneijlion ot the (Sandwich Islands. The im
portance to our commerce, and the advantages of
hiving them attached to our Government, hove
not been overlooked by our peopls. The Ltgnla
turt of Aikontatt at its session of lt-5J-'i3, ex
pressed a dt eiiled opinion in favor of the acquisi-
; tion of those islands, and the auiiie senium lit lias
j been fiut-rally entertumd wherever the qoMtion
j has been considered. Hut our Government h..s
nut departed from its established policy in regard
to this mailer. The question of the annexation
! of the S .niiwich Island's has not origin lied W illi
i our Government. The influence of our example
i has been ojierative, and cit-xens of the I'ntlcd
Mlei, in the prosecution ot their lawful schemes
1 of enterprise as individuals, may have exerted an
influence UKn the question. Hut our Govern,
i incut has taken no step tn bring about the result
which now seems tu be nearly ripe for eonsuiuma.
tion. If the islanders make up their niinda to seek
' the protection of our flag, our Government will
i not lasitate then to take the subject under eon.
aidert.tion. This is the natural course of things,
nnd it shows that wc need no fiiiiouslerism to
bring about those expansions of territory which
all intelligent men see must, sooner or Lter, be
. accomplished.
! " Our mission is to extend the area of rcpubli-
can liberty by giving to the worW practical and
, ilrmui atrative proof of its excellerre. When up.
plictioiis are niade for annexstion, it becomes us
then to look to our nwn inti rests in deciding the
i question. Although, our Government has had no.
Hung to do in niuiii(r elioiit the st..tc of things
which seem likely sunn to result in an application
Irom the Sandw ich Islands for anni x..tion, we art
assured by the doctrinrs of President Pierce's in.
augural, as well as by the American scutum nl of
the Administration, thitt the application will re.
. ceivc prompt contxdrratmn. We Cannot a moment
suppose that the measure will Ih scriuui.lv tmhar
r.ised by the outrageous pretensions set up in the
protist of the French and British Consuls. The
answer of the Amtricaii Cumiiussioner, Mr. Stve.
ranee, is a full and conclusive reply to those pre.
linsiuns ; and we have no reason to doubt that Ins
sentiments will be cordially approved ly the Ad-
ministration. !

The motive of this interrogatory is sppsrent. I
