Death of Chief JdmCIcc Pcar- At thirty-fivo minutes past ten o'clock on Satnrday, night, in the town bt Winston, Chief Justice Pear son breathed his last . Richmond Mumford Pearson, late Chief Justice of tho Suprome Court of North Carolina, was the son of Col. Kiebmond Pearson, of what was then known as Rowan county. His mother, whose maiden name was Eliza Mnmford, was of a well known family of the name then settled in Fayettevillo. Judge Pearson was born on the 28th of June 1805 in what is now known as Davie county, where Iho remained, until his prepai ration! tor college began, when he was placed at StatqsVille nnder the charge of J6hn Mnshat, Esq., one of tho most celebrated teachers of that day. Judge Pear son was in 1S59 married a second time, his second wife being the wid ow of Gen John Gray Bynum, and daughter of Charles McDowell, Esq., of Morganton. As a common lawyor, Judge Pear son was without an equal in the .State or out of it, and "as so ac knowledged tor years. Thero are nearly lour years to tiro next Presi dential race, and therefishut a small prospect that these gentlemen will be rivals in 1880, as they were last year. Mr. Blaine does not hesitate to say openly that he does not expect to be on the track. He so fully ex pects party defeat that he would not care to run. If Cockling desires to take his chances then, I don't believe Blaine's friends will seriously object. But they do not expect anything of the sort. They are expecting that General Grant will bo brosgbt out again. I heard Blaine say, i a No vember: 'Why not let Grant try his third term in 1880? Thero nov er would be a better time.
