The speaker stated farther tbs! Ilia operatives In th factories, in the town of Durham, were th moat mis erable of any people within his know ledge that Ibey . were prly . paid, earning but a bare enlwutenc. and the only reason why thej did not abandon ttat mod of living and re torn to agricultural pursuits was their inability to do so. Dr. Herndon further slandered the good people of Durham when be said that their laborers were on the verge of starvation; that their conditio i wa most miserable and wretched, iU-f-H and Unpaid, and that tbev would gladly and quickly leave the factories of Dt ham, high and dry, and f rever silent, snd return to th farm if they were only able to do so. Without aoy personal knowledge about the matter, we pronounce Dr. Herndon' state meet f Ja and a slander on th man nfacturei of Durham.
