The Weekly Recorder PUBLISHED EVFKT WEDNESDAY K. r. IIArK.VET. Ktlltor Proprietor. Cue Year.in Advance, $1 50 Six Months. 75 ON THE WINa. . On the 21st lnst., you canvasser started out in the interest of Till Kkcoudeii. We reached Chapel Dill about Ha. m., and after meet ing a large number of old friends and many subscribers, we accepted the kind invitation of Mr. Thos. Lledy to diue with bun; feeling like the inner man should be cared for, we did justice to the fine repast set out by his amiable wife. We found our clever friends, Messw. Lmdsey, llobertson and Foster busy at their stores waiting upon their customers. We nest left for Lindsay's, about six miles from the Hill, where we next spent ; the Bight with Mr. Alanley Lindsey, the postmaster and merchant of that place. After ob taining several subscribers and get ting old ones to renew, we left for Lambsville, in Chatham ' county. 7o passed through one of the finest sections of Chatham. In that sec tion we secured several new subscri bers, met many old friends. We were glad to see the wheat and oat crops looking so well and the farm era so far advanced with their prep arations for another crop. We next went to Gath, or as is familiarly known as White Cross, in Orange county. We were glad to meet Dr. Thompson, who Is one of the most popular physicians in that section. Owing to bad health he was compelled to give up a large part of his practice and engage in mercantile business. He is doing a fine business. At Gat h we shared the hospitality of your staunch friends, Mr. AVilliam Eubanks and Enoch Sykes. You do not often see a more beautiful farming coun try than this. It produces tine to bacco to perfection, yet several of the neighbors left here last week for Texas, where they will try their luch. From Gath we went to Mr. W. J. Freelaad's, who resides near Hills Loro, and spent the night. ' On ar riving there we were surprised to see bis son, Mr, rreeland, of Dur ham, the popular salesman of U. U. Frathing, and hU lovely bride. Mr. Freeland is a life-long subscriber and friend of the Uecokuer, having spent twenty -seven years of his life in the Uecokder office. At IlilUboro, Mr. John Laws, the popular IUgisterof Deeds informed lis fhat the farmers of Orange were in a prosperous condition, Gciaz down the northern side of Eno Kiver we ja.-! through a fine fanning section and foand the farms in a high state of cultivation. We added eighteen subscribers to your gtowing list. X. CdiXMBiA.S. THE WAYS AND : MEAfcS CLOSE TARIFF HEARING THE DEMANDS OP T'.IE FARMERS: Tobacco Tax, The Great Tobacco TriiNt.the Whiskey King, d inund's Bill on National Uni versity and Inebriate Asy lums; Negroes, Mormons, . Chinese, The Wlndom SI ver Dill, Morgan .t . and the Jesuits, Etc. The Wavs and Means committal have closed, their hearings an the tariff, and are now engaged in form ulating their Tariff Reform Bill. The dilliculty will be to harmonize the various conflicting interests in the'various sections. , Probably Su gar will be the most difficult article to harmonize: though it is quite certain that a high protective tariff will be place ! oa that article as the planters demand. . The farmers, for the first time in the history of this government, have appeared in strong force before the committee, : ami have urged their demands with great force. They have showa wisdom. tact and sagacity, and have certain ly mad a deep impression on the Committee ot Ways and Means; and they will probably receive consider ation from the committee. ' They have unanimously demanded the re peal of the tobacco tax ont and out, and a high tariff of $3 to f 5 a pound on the Dutch Trust Sumatra wrap per, i dp tobacco manufacturers have steadily demanded a retention of the tax, and its reduction to two cents a pound, upon the'plea that it is necessary to protect their trade marks.' This is stoutly denied by the fanners and as stoutly opposed by them. Various organizations have been started by the tobacco manufacturers to oppose the repeal of the tax when it comes up in the liouse. a The formation of a great tobacco trust uader the name of the American Tobacco Company will help the farmers in their fight in the house. It is probable the farm ers and their allies will succeed in procuring on out an out repeal of the tobacco tax. . , The Whiskey ring oppose free fruit brandy or free alcahol in med icine and the mechanic arts. Some are willing to see the tax reduced from 00 cents to 50 cents a gallon. It is thought that the Ways and Means Committee will report their tariff Bill early in February, and will push it forward as rapidly as possible. ' Senator Edmund's bill to cele brate the centennial and fourth from Columbus' discovery, by build ing a great National University at it asumgiua, is Biintcuug some at tention, though it is not probable that it will pass. , He has also in troduced a bill to establish an Asy lum for Inebriates. ' Senator Butler's bill to colonize the negroes in the Congo Free State is one of those wild vagaries that only crea'e arir. The great exodus of the negroes to the cotton States shows that the whites there want them to make cotton and sugar, aad tbat they do not want theat colon ized to Africa. On tbe same line. however, Senator Mitchell has Intro duced a stringent bill to send back the Chinese and present their ever coming to the United States; while Mr. btewart has introduced a bill in the House to disfranchise Mormons m the Territories and prevent their being naturalized as citizens. The colonizing of citizens who may be oojecuonaoe w omer citizens, at the expence oi tne uovernment u absurd to say the least. It may d harm, and certainly can do bo good. Mr. Uu Iter worth of Ohio, will, in a few days, introduce a silver bill embodyinz the views of Secretary YVindons on silver money. It will provoxe triarn oiscassion, and as there are now no party lines on the til ver question, the fate of tbe Wjn dens silver bill will be very prob lematical.
