Davis for the murder of J no. D. Horton at Chatham court, was at iustauce of swift justice. The murder was committed on 15th November, and Davis was sentenced to the gallows on the 15th February, just three months from the day of the murder. Yet Davis had a fair and impar tial trial, and is another proof that the laws are vigorously executed. Let us hear of no more lynching in any part of the State. The trial of Davis reveals another fact that criminals cannot slip through the fingers of the law by telling their own concocted stories. Davis went on the stand as his own witness, but the jury refused to believe his improbable story. Davis has taken an appeal to the Supreme court; we are informed that there is nothing substantial ia it, and is for dtlav only, a few weeks lease of life. This, of course, stops the hanging on 2Sth inst. The Governor appoints the next day of banking. THE FARMERS' TWO PER CEST BILL. However desirable may be the passage of the bill in Congress to authorize the Secretary of the Treas ury to loan money to farmers at two per cent, or however wholesome and righteous such a measure might be, we warn our farmer friends from putting any reliance in it, m a measure of relief. The subsidizing of great lines of ocean sail and steam vessels both to Europe aud the two Americas; the enormous appropriations for build-! in new teasels of the navy, togeth-! er with probably unheard of and marvellous appropriations for pen sions, ill net be likely, to leave aaything in the Treasury for the Secretary to loan either tithe banks or the farmers. But if all these things were out of the way, we have no idea that Con gresss would pass the bill at this session; it is certainly a radical de parture from ordinary legislation and however meritorious, is hardly to be expected to pass, until a public sentiment shall hare backed it up. Weregret the deplorable condi tion of the farmers brought about by several successive failures o, crops, the grinding monopolies that lave tended to plunder them and we certainly sympathize with them. Hut, with all candor and honesty, we must sa; that the far mers most rely on thetn selves for extrication from present difficulties, They must, most assuredly rai-e their own urplies, without this there can be no permanent ituprov ment or lasting pwperity. Over and above their sup!ie let the money crop be carefully cultivate 1. Byeconomy, frugality, and untiring industry, the Jo? of the pa.t may be retrieved, and, by proper manage ment, a reasonable properity hr the future may be atv.rvl. apex, waiuTcoTxty. The Etoilti- Condition of tin- i-lict. runs Y". On the 20th ult., the Eq? from this place began. A car i j.v of colored people from the surround jug country left on that cl.iv. A far they had gathered at the depot, the colored population of thi t,!; ornea out in ma., ana ome w h.t y scenes took place. Their teavt-tak-iag, hearty Uodped, aud wish. for their success in lh hti 1 of the Modus, were abundant. The planters here are a litH nervous over the matter, not know ing tow far it may extend. Kat of the railroad are larire farms nhi. li almost entirely depend on negro la- wor, id jjiwiu 4S reaciiirijr out into the country, and unsettling ar rangements for tUi corning erot. The condition it the people in this section is deplorable; but n -t more so than elsewhere, in the cot ton belt. Tobacco will be more generally cultivaUd. and more at tention given to raiding aopplie. Wheat and ate which were fine, are injured by the hessioa fly.
