E C. HACKNEY, Editor. 1'ro. WEDNESDAY', May 13, 1881, HOW It ir NOW? In 1876 there were three hogs to one sheep in this State as re ported at the Auditor's office. The Recorder wants to see more sheep and less worthless curs in this country In 1S76 Person, Orange, Alamance, Caswell and Uranville -were not mentioned. We want to hear from these counties. In that year the largest hog rais ing counties compared with the number of sheep were as fol lows: Robeson county claimed by odds the largest number of hogs, thirty-four thousand five hundred and sixty-eight, and had only eight thousand and four sheep; oyer four to one. Wake v comes next with twenty-seven thousand one hundred and forty hogs, and had only nine thousand and four sheep; three to one. Sampson had twenty- five thousand two hundred and twenty-6even hogs, seven thous and six hundred and seventy two sheep; over three hogs to a a sheeo. Chatham was more evenly balanced than any oth er county; she had twenty-three thousand two hundred and forty hogs, and fifteen thousand sheep. Johnston county had twenty-two thousand two hun dred and twenty-three hogs, and six thousand one hundred and seven sheep; over three to one. Lenoir had fourteen thous and six hundred and nine hogs and one thousand eight hundred and sixteen sheep; fourteen to one. Beaufort had fourtwn thorn and five hundred and nine tn hscs, and thirty -two bun dred heer: over tour to one Cumberland hal fifteen thous and teven hundred and seventy eight hogs, and forty-eilii hundred sheep: over three tt one. Davidson had fouite thousand two hundred and eighty -nine hogs and one thous aid and fourteen sheep. Edge combe had fifteen thousand one hundred and twenty-four hogs and one thousand four hundred and fifty-two sheep. Iredell had thirteen thousand and five hur dred hogs and six thousand seven hundred and eighty-three sheeo. Franklin had thirteen thousand six hundred and t won ty-two hogs and four thousand one hundred and 6ixty-six sheep, Pitt had seventeen thousand four hundred and one hogs and one thousand seven hundred and forty-six sheep. Rowan bad thirteen thousand hogs and four thousand three hundred and thirty-two sheep. We ask. how is it now? Are the hogs still in the lead! No, but the worthless dogs are! Let V If New St. 1 be Lynchburg Advance well says: "The conflicting state ments about the condition of the United States Treasury remind us of the story of the Alabama negro who imigrated to Miss issippi and remained only one year. On his return his friends questioned him as to why he came back "Didn't you like the country!" "O, yes, flue country rich land." "Was vhe climate bud?" "I never was heavier in my life." "Did you make a good crop?" "Ob yes, spiebdid crop?" "What was the matter then.1" "Well you see I didn't like the arith metic ovf r there. When I came to settle up Xmas. Mr. Jone he ciphered away and at the eud of it this is what I heard, nought's a nought and nine is sine, all the corn and cotton is mine, and so I came back." Jufet so the common citizens cannot be expected to under Mandthe iutrici of Wash ington arithmetic. They know this much however that the government like the house leech is always crying "More, more.' When ths people cry for reform and reduction of taxation they are answered by an increased of tariff rates; they are told that the income of the government is insufficient for current ex penses, and Mr. Foster is run ning about to scrape together money enough to meet govern ment obligations. Let us have a new style of arithmetic. - (Mttructl ?e Implement of War. Gunboats, battlesnips, torpe do boats and means of naval warfare have occupied such a large share of our discussion recently that advances in the science of warfare on land has been scarcely considered. The old time antagonism between Germany and France has kept those countries on the constant lookout for new and deadly weapons for foot soldiers, says the New York Press. The new rifle now being in troduced in the German army is pronounced by old soldiers as a weapon almost too horrible for use against an enemy in civilized warfare. The bullet s shaped like a fat cigarette, is a trifle over an inch long and is projected with a force that has sent it through five full knap sacks placed in echelon over 500 feet from the'spot where the gun was discharged. It is claimed that the bullets will penetrate a human body at a distance of 6,000 feet and even more. With such destructive implements of warfare being invented and put into practical use, the world will be tempted, soon to declare for universal disarmament and the settle ment of international differ erences by arbitration thro:;gh very fear of the consequent.-. of war. The reck less manner in wl ich so-called newspiper associa tions sometimes conduct thc-i: affairs is illustrated by an ir.ci dent which occurred in Phila delphia a few days ago. One of the soundest banking instit i tlons of that city was repoo'd by a local paper as being it. financial distress, when, w::h out takinsr 6teps to verify the report, an association which pretends to furnish news, sent the item to the papers which it serves throughout the country, and by so doing injured, to the extent of its ability, the in Hi tution referred to. The fact that there was no' truth in the report could have been ascer tained in a few moments had inquiry been made. A si .;ilar instance occurred in England some years ago, but fortunate ly for the party aggrieved, the news association was incorpor ated, and was compelled by the courts to pay one hundred thousand dollars to the injured party. ' A press goods manufacture who desired to establish a fac tory far this country recently, according to a .letter in an in dustrial paper, gave up the idea, for the reason that he could not employ men here suf ficiently skilled to do the work, lie ascerted that American labor is not only deficient but fifty years behind the times. If what this manufacturer said be true, it appears that a blunder was committed when the con tract labor law was passed by Consrress. as unskilled lab r continues to come into tin' country to take the place of that already here, while skillud workmen are excluded. The votine contest craze h.m struck St. Louis and brought about a queer state of affair Some time ago the Repubh; inaugurated a contest to deter .nine who were the most popu lar clergymen in St. Louis, and promised as an incentive to itend the winners on an extend ed trip through Europe. Now the Globe-Democrat is taking a vote on the most popular bar ic eepers in the city, promiuing to H;nd them over the same route. It is said thatTf milk has a olufih of blue overspreading the urfac when poured into the pan, and only a faiut and filmy show of cream arises after stand ing all night, thats a sure sign of a hot, dry summer. If, on the other hand, the milk when poured in the pan. has a rich, almost yellowish hue and next morniug shows cream as thick as sole-leather, then look put for a wet summor and much rheumatism. v : J; ' Tub Woman's National In dustrial League of America, of which Charlotte Smith is presi dent, has adopted resolutions in which the refusal of the Em peror of China to receive ex Senator Blair as United States minister is spoken of as "the highest compliment that could be bestowed on a citizen of the United States." " The Washing tion Post says the resolutions then heartily indorse Mr. Blair for his earnest advocacy of the Chinese exclusion act, and for his zealous efforts whilo in the Senate in behalf of the indus trial classes the workingraen and women of the country. The circus clown is supposed to make people merry, butdewn in Tennessee, one of them suc ceeded in making an audience angry. The people jeered at him at first ana then some one threw a brickbat which struck him squarely in the face and knocked him senseless with a broken nose and jaw. Then the crowd broke the seats and tore down the tents' and wreck ed the sideshow It must io very funny clown who can in cite a riot like that. . It is true. The Parisian hair dressers have decreed that bangs must go. It will please the heart of that good old school ma'am who fought such a, fight against them some time ago. The chignon iscomimr in again, and it is to have two wicked little curls peeping out behind. There is a!.o to be a romantic curl on "the forehead, but the rest of the tresses are to be brushed up.
