J - -St TMe Durham VOL. 76-NO. 52. DURHAM, N. C., THURSDAY, MAY 21, 1896. ESTABLISHED 1820 Recorder Sorry Ha Went. The recantation letter of Col. Jas. H. Holt. Jr. recently elected by the republicans of this dis trict aa a delegate to the Na tional convention,";, is.-; a matter of no less comment and criti cism than was his leaving the democratic party some time ego. No matter what strictures mav be made as to his political adroitness, his letter, cutting loose from those with whom be had so recently cast bis lot. and throwing up the honor they bad confered upon him, bears the impress of honest manhood and uuquest ion able loyalty to what be conceives to be the best in terest of his people. His pecu niary interest are certainly with the republican party, but in home affairs, be has shown that higher motives control his ac tion. . . The Colonel was just from a meeting'of the Masonic Lodge, where they say the highest sen timents are promulgated and where the strictest safeguards prevent the admission of the un worthy, when he met at Golds boro the returning delegates from the Russell convention, white and black reeking with the fumes of political and phy sical debauchery, mingled on the common ground of social equality.1 It was more than the nerves of the Colonel 4 cou'd stand. He bad read that "birds of a feather flock together," and was unwilling to be netted with that flock; and perhaps too he thought; Though my factory crumble to found- tion ttone, The hand of Jim Holt shall be hii own : A ad pew will it in social grasp The band of such as Bill Crews clasp. Anyhow he "writ' a letter, which has practically taken him out of politics for some time, to come Plaid Presses are a safer investment anyway, with or without McKinley. ' ' The Confederate Veterans all over Tixie are making arrange ments (or a march on Richmond at the laying of the corner stone of the Jeff Davis monument, July 2d. His well' Many of them, in all human probability, will never have another opportunity to meet so many of their com rades. The gathering will possi Lly recall some sad memories of occasions and deeds that should be kept fresh and green in the Southern heart of deeds of fame more endearing than brass or breeze. However, Richmond may open her homes, her heart and her purse, she cannot add a laurel to the crown of generous courtesy extended at the unveiling ot the J Ix Monument several years ago. I The world never witnessed sach a day, and it could only have oc curred thcie, at the centre of the j"Lwt Cause." 1 Cy closes havo swept a num :lcr of towns in Texas, killing ; Imnilrwla nf rtnnrtla and destroy- g t t ing an untold amount of property. The authorities are calling lot aid to succor and feed many injured and homeless. We here in North Carolina should be thankful for our exemption from awful visita tions, and extend practical sym pathy to our stricken fellow crea tures. : -"-:-; t Secretaries Olney and Carlisle I recently consented, for the first time since they held office, to oe photographed seated at their desks. The pictures were taken at the request ot The Ladies' J Home Journal, and wtu w usou to Illustrate ex-President Har rison'a article describing tLe workings of the State Depart ment In the July number of khat magaxine. Pat Walsh, editor of the Augusta Chronicle, made a seri ous omission in his speech at Southern Pines. He covered ev erything except our. gold mining interests, and Sandy Smith, of Ca barrus, made a big kick about it. After the speech he went around hunting Pat, but couldn't corner him until, walking the piazza, be looked into an open - window and saw Mr. Walsh at dinner. Sandy climbed into the window and had Pat where he coldn't retreat. He dropped ; a (bur pound lump of gold on Pat's plate with a rattle that made people look around, poured a handful of nuggets in Tat's empty glass and placed the plaster cast of the 22 pound nugget in front of the orator. Then Sandy gave Pat some points on gold sad gold mining, and the result was that Mr. Walsh promised to make another speech and do better. Charlotte News. ; . Republican Candidates. ' The republican state convention at Raleigh nominated the follow ing ticket: Cor Governor Daniel L. Rus sell. For United States Senator Je ter C. Pritchard. For Attorney General Z. V. Walser. . For Auditor Ruff Henderson. For Associate Justire R. M. Douglass. For Chairman Ex -Committee E. A. Holton. ' Delegates at large to national convention Jeter C. Pritchard and James E. Boyd. The nominees are a mixture of the gold and silver elements of the party and also of the Pritchard and Settle factions. It is no fight of ours; let 'era "lay on McDuff," and .the hind most do the best they can. Equal Rights to All. Reaped for law is the duty of a citizen, and absolutely essential to good government. The laws, to command respect, should be just and bo impartially administered. Discriminations in favor of the rich are influential, excites com ment, and arouses, the hot indig nation of all fair minded people, and are jealously observed and noted by the lawless clasps. The pety thief whose hunger and wretchedness, perhaps, have driven him to commit crime, can not understand (nor can any one else for that matter) why he should pay the extreme jwnalty of the law for Mis offence, which the polished society scamp, who has looted a bank and stolen Lis thou sands, should he mildly dealt with and Lave the tears and sym pathy of the court. The wild Irishman who has engaged in a little "scrimmage" can not understand why he should go to the roads to work out the fine and corts, while his more fortunately circumstanced neigh bor who has been "raising sand" should have judgement suspended or a nol pros centered in his case. ' Our North Carolina courts as a rule- are free from such contcmp- table discriminations, , thereby making the few instances of favor itism that do occur morcconepicu The officer, whoever ho may be, who lends himself to such con kmptible discriminations should be branded with public disnp proval at the first opportunity. Since the nomination by the re publican convention of D. L. Rus sell for governor, the logical thing for the populist and democrats to do, if they want to defeat Russell, it to unite on Maj. W. A.' Goth rle, of Durham, a free silverite who commands the respect of all parties, This is merely the idea of a looker on, who views the sit uation impartially, both as to par ties and men, and hat no favorite among them. , : The senate has passed the river and harbor bill,' appropriating 76,000,000. This may bo all right, but where is 'the high-land appropiation to come from. Their thirst has evidently enduced them to give undue merit to water. The papers say that Grover Cleveland has written a letter de clining to be president for the third term. No man who has vatched his course expected him jo want to be president again, but there are many thoughtful people who think he would like to be dictator forlife, and that his vault ing ambition is working for that end. Col. Waddell. who is a free silver man, and a learned Biblical scholar has recently written a good deal denying the doctrine ot fu'ure punishment. The colonel is also a politician of no mean ability, and of some aspiration for office. If he wants to run at this juncture his platform, we conjee ture, would be "No hell and free Silver." We have no doubt it would take with the masses. . Sometimes the press reports' are as unreliable as the news we gen erally get from Cuba. It turns out that the reported captain of Math is, formerly editor of the Winston Seutinel on board the filibuster steamer competitor, which came near disrupting the relations between the two great governments of United States aud Spain, was all a fake a lie manu factured out of the whole cloth. Matins is ou his farm in Florida, and has not been to Cuba or at tempted to go there in any ca pacity. The uninitiated marvel that the daily New York World, con turning from ten to twenty pages can be sold down here at one cent a copy. .The solution is easy to any man who will think a min ute. Of course the one cent docs not pay for the paj.er it is printed on and the news .dealers commis sion, but it is the gold bug organ, and the reasonable supposition is that the World is getting more for every copy printed than ever before, paid by the single stand ard syndicate, and that this low price is only a dodge to descminate Wall street literature by robbing the United States post office de partment. Rejected Lovur Kills Himself. Acrsrnjr, N. Y., May 13. Charles A. Weddington, assist ant financial clerk of the state senate, sho himself at the borne of William E. Webster in this city, today. Weddington was in love with Miss Belle Webster, and it is thought that his suicide was because she had rejected his proposal of inarriago, lie was was about twenty-one years of age, and had been keeping com pany with Miss Webster about a year. While the republican cohorts, massed in Raleigh, are attracting so much attention from tho large audience of democrats and popu list who view the play from pri vate boxes of tho political spec tacular stage, it is well for the country, and by tho country we mean the people who support it both in peace and was, to consider whether it is a farce, a comedy, or a Inulgedy, upon which their at tention is centered. When Rome burned, Nero thought it an amus ins comedy, but it was the last sadtradegy of the Empire; and when Tom Settle is knifed by the conspirators in bis camp as he will be, not that they love him Jess, but the party and America more, possibly, like Cesar he will ex claim, "Ettu Brutus." W. B. Tbompseii, editor of the Kews, st Cbtpct Hill, wss a Durham visitor jrttrJay. y The Agony Over. As stated in last Week's Re- cordkr, the great republican mountain which was in such ex treme ugony at Raleigh for two days and nights, has brought forth Daniel Russell for governor and ended its labor. Dockery's chances, thought to be as firm as the foundation of the granite .cliffs of his mountain home, were undermined by the political quicksands (sometimes called quicksilver) of the Cape v ear river, and , the cohorts or dained that "My Son Oliver" must take a back seat not because he was not more than the peer of his opjo lent in service to his party, inability and in character, but because his gold-plated sabre was powerless to pierce the silver shield behind which his antagonist fought. If there is any significance in the action of conventions fresh from the people in every corner of the state, it is plain that even the republicans of North Carolina, with all their loyalty to party, cannot be driven to work for a gold standard candidate. It is a sign of the times which some peo- plo here in the fifth district would do well to note, for it makes it extremely difficult for the Tom Reed, Tom Settle, anti-McKinley, anti-Jim Young combine to climb on the band wagon and ride to the pie counter ; . Their Verdict Guilty. . Newport, Ky., May 14. The Scott Jackson case went to the jury at 10 o'clock this morning. Before retiring the Judge's type writtes instructions and the bloody clotnes, letters, and other articles that were shown in evidence were placed in their hands ' , At 12:05 the jury returned to the court room with a verdict. Amid a deathlike stillness the foreman handed the verdict to the clerk, who read as follows: "We the jury find the defen dant, Scott Jackson, guilty of murder in the first degree and fix his penalty at death." Jackson himself received his doom with no manifestation of emotion except paleness of the face None cf his relatives was present. The aged father of Pearl Bryan and her brother, Frederick Bryan were present when the verdict was rendered. Congressional Candidates. The republican conventions have nominated the following candidates for congress. First Endorsed Harry Skin ner. 1 Second George II. Whit (col,) ofNewbern. Third No candidate nomina ted. Fourth X. C. English (Popu list), 01 Randolph. Fifth Thomas Settle, of Rock ingham. Sixth J. M, Smith, of Rich mond, and Dr. Norment, of Re- boon. Seventh No nomination. Eighth No domination. Ninth Richmond Pearson, of Buncombe. Electors have been nominated only in, four districts, J.J. Mar tin, in the Second ; II. F. Chapin, in the Fourth ; Samuel Marshall in the Eighth, and Seymour W. Hancock, of Craven, in the Third. Senator Pritcbard and Dan ltd Russell, in the event of Mc Kioley't election, will dispenje the federal pie in North Caro lina. Under the circumstances it it to be presumed that the share falling to the lot of local politicians who early joined and howled for the anti-McKinley. Pritchard combine, will be like uncle Remus' 'possum, "bery on aatifyia." The Central Sunday school of Raleigh will nil plcnle escursion to Oxford Best Thursday. 7jc round trip. ' Editorial Correspondence. Raleigh, May 14. 4:15 p. m The republican state convention is on here today, and politics is all the talk. The convention met in Metro politan hall and was called to or der at 12:30 o'clock by E. A Hol ton, chairman of the state repub lican executive committee. J. C. L. "Logan" Harris, of this place, icted as temporary secretary and John C. Dancy, colored, of Salis bury, called the roll of the coun ties. After the roll of counties were ci.lled temporary Chairman Hol ton anuounced the committee on credentials and stated that his friends thought it best to adjourn the convention until 4 o'clock to give the committee time to make out their report. There were calls for Pritchard and he announ ced that he would make a talk before the convention adjourned. The convention then adjourned subject to the call of the chairman. The delegation from seventeen connties are contested and the committee on credentials will make their report sometime late in the afternoon. The whole thing is evidently "cut and dried," so to speak, havemg been arranged in caucus last night. Holton will be elected permanent chairman without any fuss." It is generally understood that a compromise between the Pritch ard and Holton forces bos been effected and that Holton is to be chairman and Pritchard will name the committees. At this time it looks like Doek- ery will'be nominated for gover nor. Cloudburst Near Staunton. StAtrsTox, Va., May 13. A heavy rain, wind, and thunder storm, accompanied by a cloud burst, wrought havoc in this city late this afternoon. The cloud burst occurred about one mile west of the city and completely submerged Gypsy Hill Park and a part of Lewis street, washing away small houses and outbuild ings and gardens and flooding cellars. Several colored people had to be rescued from upper stories with ladders. The Augusta electric street car and light plants were greatly damaged. The loss can not be approximated tonight. McKinley and Free Silver- Sheridan, Wyo., May 15. McKinley and free silver was de clared by the republican state con vention today. The delegates were instructed to support Chairman Vandeventer. for a place on the national com mittee, and McKinley for presi dent. The financial plank in full is as follows: "We re-affirm allegiance to the principles of bi-metallism as enun ciated in the republican state plat torm adopted at (Jasper in 1894; we commend the record of our senators and representatives in congress in maintaining these principles, and we instruct our delegates to the St. Louis conven tion to take like action when the financial plank ot the platform of their convention is being made. ' Of Interest Here- New York, May 13. Coun sel for the officials of tho Ameri can Tobacco company, who were indicted last week for violation of the anti trust law, appeared in the court of general sessions today and filed a demurer. No date has yet been fixed for argument on the ilemurer. Tub cry of fraud is raised by the defeated candidates at the republi can state convention. . Of course there was fraud. Whoever heard of a convention in which It was not practiced? It has been from the beginning and will to the end, if left in control of spoil grabbers, n they have been from first to last.
