The Herald is glad to set its readers right ou this by the pub lication of an official letter from the town attorney. Some papers and some peopl are saying the colored republicans will not support Russell for gov- rata 1 , i f ernor. iney nave paia mtie at tention to things political the past thirty years, or their u emory is sadly at fault. Never in all this time has the colored element tailed to kick at the action of the conventions and breath most dire vengeance against the nomi nees, yet they have just as persist ently and regularly gone to the polls ou election day and de posited their ballott for the party candidate. Let no body fool themselves. Some of the colored voters will hold out a long time i i hope of being paid to stop kick ing, but in November they w ill vote for Russell, and the balance of the ticket as certainly as the sun rises and sets on tbat day. State Newt. Shelby. N. C, May 18. The republicans in this, Cleveland county, are very mad over the manner in which they were chat- ed out of their vote in the state convention. J. B. Foituue cast the county's two votes for Russell, and the chairman of the county, executive committee says that there are only two Russell iren in the whole county, pud they are Fortune and anotler, and says that Fcrtune had no business to represert the county in that way Gbeexsboko, N. Einouam, Supt. They Made Him Sick. Golusboro, N. C, May 15. (Special) Mr. James II. Holt, Jr., the youg cotton roanufact urer wbo recently went over to the republican party because he was an advocate of protection and was made a delegate to the St. Louis convention, is in this city today by cbrnce, and here met nnd viewed the returning republican forces from the state convention that last night n in mated Russell for governor. In consequence he published this afternoon in the Goldsboro Daily Argus the following letter which speaks for itself; Editor Argus: It is an old saying but a true one that self preservation is the first law of nature." j Acting on this prin ciple from a mistaken standpoint of view, as to in what consisted my preservation as a purely business question, I have of late lent my aid and influence to the furtherance of the policy of protection championed by Mc- Kmley and advocated by the republican party and I have gone so far as to permit myself to be named as a delegate from the fifth, my resident district, to the St. Louis National re publican convention. But, Mr. Editor, today in the city of Goldsboro on my way home from the session of the Mystic Shrine in Newberne, I am greet ed by a scena that gives me pause and deeper reflection than heretofore. I have read of the scenes and experiences of 'G8 as we read of other dark epochs in history, but, reared since that time, growing up under the benign influence of democracy and en joying only the pacific blessings and elevating experience tbat appertain to its supieinacy, I could not comprehend what "the men of old" endured, nor could mv mind formulate a pic ture so dark as their words painted. Today in Goldsboro I am able to approximate from what democracy has delivered the state and to what we are again tending. I am greeted here by a seething, surging mass of conglomerated humanity, howling negroes 'and exultant white men, arm in arm, bearing aloft a banner with the painted picture of "D. L. Russell, our choice" for governor and with McKinley badges "on the side." And this is the party with which I have become ailed and to this belongs the negro and all with which I am to consort at St. Louis. "My God, Aber- nethy!" Never. I hereby re cent, abjure, abher my afflia tion with this party that fosters and glories in such scenes in North Carolina. I believe, Mr. Editor, in honest money, sound money, if you will, honest val ues and in "our" turn at protec tion to the infant manufactur ing industries of the South. But what would industry, how ever much exerted, amount to in a state dominated by Russell and his mob of howling sav ages? Yes, Mr. Editor, there is protection, and there is greater protection and for tbat greater protection I hereby withdraw as a delegate to the St. Louis con vention, renounce my affiliation witn the republican party, only just begun, I am happy to say, and return an bumble but earn est worker in the ranks of de mocracy for white supremacy in nortn Carolina, good governs ment economically administer ed and home protection. ery truly, J.
