Possibly at no timeia the history of North Carolina has the election of a United States senator been of such vast importance to the stat and nation as now. Upou our next Wis ature this heavy re- O w . snonsibility devolves, and in the hands of their choice will be the weight which must adjust the balance of power between the suffering millions and the few Shylock monopolist, on the politi cal scales, which lately havo rare ly been rightly adjusted. So far as North Carolina is con cerned whatever may have been the accident to the balance of the country ou November 3, this state has uttered no uncertain voice on the financial question the great and paramount issue of the day, Irrespective of party affiliation, no man can go to the United States senate as an exponent of the views of a majority of North Carolinians who is uot u iquesticn able and uuequivocally iu touch with their recently expressed judgement for the free coinage o! silver. Knowing this, and also the immense power the peculiar constitution of the next senate will likely put iu the hands its bosom to a life he would never have attained, he suffers his foster mother and his god fathers to be dragged iuto disrepute for a sum which surely the auditor of the great state of North Carolina should be able to command, and which he admitted he coald com mand if he were "disposed toH Even as secretary and treasurer of the Caucasion Publishing Co., le could have gotten the money, but iu utter disregard of the papers future, and the straights his own management has reduced it to, Auditor Ayer, tcorns the means by which he lose to power. By such conduct to the organ of the populist party, he is guilty of un pardonable conduct, not only to the stockholders but to the entire party as well. But he stands un masked at last. The intimation by the Bell Telephone company that they would soon connect Durham with Grensboro and Danville is very gratefully received by the business men from Raleigh to Danville. Apart from its con yenience to the public, the indi cations are that the line would pay a handsome dividend on the outlay. When they get to Greensboro why not have a line to Wiuston-Salera ? It xrrEARs the attempt to tak the Atlantic and North Carolina railroad 'out of polities" by leas ing it to a syndicate before the re publican governor can be iusUll- ed and appoiut tUte pron which would control it, has liafl the effect of bringing the wal more "in politics" than ever be fore. It is very evident that botl parties wish to u? it as a jol'iti cal lever, but as we are not Ih jury m the c&e, we do not yet fl called on to hand in a corotv era verdict. the North Carolina representative, in order to reap the full fruition of his wholesale purchcase of American citizens, it is said that Mark Ilanna has in North Caro- ina his attorney agents visiting the members elect of our legisla ture to ascertain how many Bene dict Arnold's can he found among hem, nnd what their price is. The people have been warned, Marion Butler, the junior senator the once villified s.nd scorned by the "rule or ruin" machine, like a faithful sentinel on the house top, has blown In bugle blast in his letter of the 14th addressed to Seuator Pritchard. He gives M r. Pritchard some plain and pun ijent reasons for or;ing bis re- PRITCHARD'S AUDACITY. Though North Carolina has gone for free silver by 20.0U0 majority, if the Hon: Jeter G Pritcbard's reply to Senator Butler, which we give below, is to be credited, it appears that we are to have a minority senator to represent the state, This is not so astonishing as the bold and blatant assertion made by Mr. Pritchard that he has "already obtained enough pledges from populist members' to secure his election whidh, , Gibson to Ulnatrt Dickeua. C, D. Gibson and " Edward W. Bok were chatting together in the foVmer's studio one day,wh:n the editor of The Ladies' Home journal said: . ; ; J'Why don't you drop the Amer ican girl, Gibson, and try some thing entirely new?" .'What is there new?" asked Gibson. ' "Illustrate Dickens," lonically answered the editor. 'Illustrate Dickens !" repeated Gibson. "Why, man alive - Just then the artist's mother came into the studio. "Mother' he said, "what have I always told you I would rather do in the way of illustration than anythingelse?" "Well, I don't know, Dana, un less it is to illustrate Dickens." " "Exactly, and Bok walks in just now and asks me to. do it' Gibson went to Europe on his wedding trip and remained in London for six months. Thete he worked away at his Dickens sketches. - Upon his return a few weeks ago he delivered the first drawings of the series to The Ladies'Home Journal, and the initial one will be printed in the Christmas issue. The finished drawings are said to be remark ble portrayals. The characters chosen are .Pickwick; Pecksniff and his two daughters; David Senator Ransom Son. Mr. Thos. R. Ransom, son of Ion. Matt. W.
