BIKWWM WW I mil U-, ' . TOBACCO. , v Prices and Purchasers of tbe Weed. " The following from the Dan?ille, Va.t Tobacco Journal of October 24th, a paper devoted to the tobacco interest generally "in all Us branches" and the Danville tobacco market in particular, throws light on a subject which is of much Interest to North' Carolinians, to tobacco growers, and to the development of truth and justice.: The Journal Bays ' "It has bean, heralded around that the difference In the prices of tobacco today and what they were eight or ten years ago, Is directly due to the formation of the American Tobacco Company, and that that company now-Qxet.cdoee.onjfll the markets. '- Cantlis thing be true? According to recant utisifes gathered ny a contemporary Journal it was shown that about 240,009,000 pounds of tobacco wire sold on tbe warehouse floors, id Virginia and North Carolina, to say noth ing of South Carollua, which sold about 20,000,000 pounds, making an aggregate of about 200,000,000 pounds sold on the warehouse floors of the three States. Of this amount the American Tobacco Com. pany purchased about 35,000,000 pounds, or less than one seventh of the amount sold. Now bow can any Arm or corpora tion dictate prices of a raw article when thatObcern purchases only one seventh of the amount sold f ' As regards this market, Danville, Vs.( it is the largest bright loose leaf tobacco market la the world, the annual sales of which amount to 50,000,000 pounds and Is really the market by which prices on other markets are guaged. On this mar ket the American Tobacco Company boys on tbe warehouse floors less than one ninth of the total sales, with several independent firms each buying fully as much as the American. It Is nonsense to talk of s firm buying only one-seventh of a crop dictating the price of that crop. It Is more reasonable to suppose that morr'Ttj ipun in consumption." We wore aware of the approximate amount sold la tbe three States, as The Post Lai of late published such Informa tion from the mtrkets, aad called atten tion to the rapid and enormous Increase In production, the production extending to bew territory, etc., but we before had no idea of the relative amount required and purchased by the American Tobacco Company. This Information given by our Danville contemporary is very im portant and merits consideration, no less by growers, and those contemplating growing, than others who, from one motive and another more or less vicious, have been told and led to believe that to this particular company Is due all the woes and disappointments which have tf. Men tobacco growers during the put decade. The growers are Interested In this le cause, If this company only requires and takes for Its business one seventh of the amount offered on the warehouse floors of the three Ststes, and Its taking controls and fixes the price for the market ss con tended by msny, then there must be seven times more tobacco grown than tbe legit (mate demand or the requirements of tbe world will justify. The Journal says, however, that each of several company not at all connected with the Americau Tobacco Company buy as much on the Danville market as the latter company, which shows not only competition, but further sustains the assertion that, with this competition, If price arc below the proper level, that far too much Is pro duced; otherwise this competition would necessarily keep op prices. But if 230,. 000,000 pounds are offered on the market, and only two-thirds of that amount Is required for manufacture, It Is pore than foolish to expect prices to sversge so blab ss would be tbe case If tha sunnl - i r- only equaled the demand. Cut like cotton, the tendency Is to In crease tbe output rather thao otherwise, sod this at n much greater rate than the dcaaml will increase. The profit, there fore, to the Individual farmer must de pend entirely upon the' quality of his crop, and so far throughout tbe markets we believe good tobacco Las commanded good prices. And- while good tobacco will command good prices, tbs excessive uiply, tbe great bulk of which Is In ferlor, will certainty keep the average quite low. There Is soother matter of local and personal Interest In connection with this business. 0., THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 9, 1899 Several of the large stockholders in the American Tobacco Company are North Carolinians, residents of the State, and devoting ihelr energies and fortunes to the upbuilding of the State. Besides the immense tobacco plants owned by the company 'and Immediately managed by these North Carolinians, these particular gentlemen are largely interested In Im portant Industries other tbaa tobacco already established in the Slate and In others being developed, , Those estab lished and now in operation at different points, Including their tobacco plants, employ.and by such employment eupport, over 23,000 people all citizens ipf the State. 8 The weekly pay roll In alt these Industries salaries and wages exceeds $23,000 i The' Messrs. : Duke and Mr. Watta haf a f osomejeJamt?! quite all of the. t largrtignpfistlng 'JudueTml enterprises? notably cotton mills. ( We make no rt fer ence here to belt 'charitable and benevo lent gifts. Many of these are known, but very many, involving thousands of dclUrs, are not known to the public, as these benefactors refuse to furnish the press with Information concerning them.) These facte as to these Investments, em ployment and wages,. It is due to state, we learned from Mr. Walts himself, some months ago. . " ' This American Tobacco Company is controlled largely by North Carolinians. Millions 'of dollars of the money they have accumulated are' invested In the Slate, giving employment to thousands and furnishing markets for the products of very many more. If these North Car olinians, therefore, controlling this great company, are guilty of the oppression and robbery of their own fellowtltlrens as their personal and other enemies have so assiduously proclaimed, tbey would deserve the exccrat!jn of all good citi zens; but when, as the Danville Journal shows, they have conducted and are con ducting their great enterprise strictly along the lines of legitimate business methods, dealing In the marketa In their particular branch as others do on other voting the profits Uey secure, not from North Carolina, but the worhl,( to the dcvelopnjq.it of various enterprises and resources within tho State and giving employment and support to Increasing thousands of men and women In North Carolina, we ask in the name of all that is honest, In tbe name of that high char acter for Justice for which tie prople of this State were onco so noted. If tbe cru sade made and perisled In by designing and envious men In particular and well meaning but misinformed men too large ly, ought not to cease? 8hould our own people who thus contribute to the wel fare of the Stste not be encouraged rather titan be continually maligned and tra duced? And should not tbe personal envy, malice and misrepresentations of s few enemies bo condemned rather than condoned or approved?'
