His friends wish him a speedy .re covery. W. A. Oneal and family, of East Durham, are spending this week visiting friends and rela tives in this section. Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Oneal, of East Durham, spent Sunday with Mrs. C. Oneal.' J. G. Ferguson! of East Dur ham, is with his sick brother. The writer has had a very sick boy for the Iat fcv days. He is better now. Hubert, the 8-year-old son of Mr. Simeon Brinkley, has been suffering a great deal with a bone felon. J. E. Ferrell, of Edgemont, has moved to his father's,. Mr. Z. P. Ferrill's. Mrs. Dock Carpenter spent the day, Tuesday, with W. J. Fer guson's family. Mr. and Mrs. II. M. Oneal spent Thursday night with W. J. Ferguson' family. Squire Rogers shot and killed Jim Pearson Tuesday. Rogers gave himself up to the officers and the case was tried Wednes day. According to the evidence Rogers was justifiable in killing the negro, so he was turned loose. - C. P. Johnson moved from this neighborhood Monday. May he find much pleasure at his new has been in business since. It has been since making his home in Chapel Hill that he has met, wooed and married Miss Foister. They will reside in Chapel Hill in the future, Mr. Leigh continu ing his business in that town. Last Wednesday evening there was a very pretty marriage cere mony solemnized at the home of Mr. J. P. Cutts, on South street, when Miss Lillian Cutts, his daughter, was given in marriage to Mr. J. J. Duke. Rev. T. A. Smoot, pastor of Main Street Methodist church, officiated. On account of illness of Mr. Cutts the affair was a very quiet one and only the relatives and intimate friends of the couple were present. Both Mr. Duke and his bride are very popular and have a large number of friends in Durham. Mr. Duke has been in the employ of the AmericanTobacco company for many years and is a young man who makes friends of all those with whom he comes in contact Quiet and unassuming he has that way about him that makes friends. Everything was quiet in this section, but everybody seemed to enjoy themselves. There was a Sunday school treat at Union Grove Wednesday. There was plenty to eat, and all report a splendid time. They have now gone on a bridal trip north. Mr. Oldham is bookkeeper for the Virginia-Carolina Chemical company, and has made his home here for a goodly number of years. He has a large number of friends in Durham, who will be suprised .to hear of his mar riage and who will hasten to extend congratulations and best wishes. His bride is a very charming young woman, who has visited Durham on a number of occa sions, she has many friends here. The only Durham people who attended the marriage were Messrs. H. l Murphy and R. T. Faucctte, Jr. foister-lelgti. Last week there was a mar riage in Chapel Hill, when Mr. II. D. Leigh and Miss Jennie Foister were joined in wedlock. It was a quiet affair. Mr, Leigh is well known here and has a large number of rel atives and friends in this section. Sometime ago he moved fronr Crumpacker and Miss Nettie Har ris. They have both resided in this city for a number of years and at the marriage there were no attendants. The vows were said at 9:30 o'clock and Rev. T. A. Smoot, pastor of Alain Street Methodist church, officiated. There were no attendants and the marriage was very quiet one. The bride had lived in Durham for sometime, having come here from Wake county, and there were but very few of her relatives present to witness the marriage vows. Mr. Crumpacker has lived in Durham most of his lifo and there are a large number who will extend congratulations and best wishes. For the present this couple has engaged board at the home of a relative on Wilker son avenue. Prof. J. A. Mathcson has re signed as superintendent of the city graded schools, his resigna tion to take effect at once, and Prof. W. I).
