Rev. J. D. Bowcn, of Wake Forest, preached at lied Mount ain Baptist church Saturday and Sunday. The church was so much pleased with him that they gave him a call to become their pastor. Mrs. Sam II. Jones visited her parents, Capt. and Mrs. Wm. Bowling, Saturday and Sunday. There was quite an interesting debate at Kougemont school Fri day night. Mr. J. R. Bowen, of Durham, spent Sunday with his father, Mr. Rufus Bowen. There will be prayer service at Red Mountain church next Sun day, and the Sunbeams meet the second Sunday in February. The Merchants Association of this city have prepared a lot of resolutions to be presented to the legislature to have certain laws changed, the principal idea of the resolutions being to make men pay their bills or be subject to fine or imprisonment. Mr. U. N. HolTman, a student of Trinity college, who is editor-in-chief of the Chronicle, a col lege publication, received a tele gram Wednesday night calling him to his home Iron Mountain, Lincoln county, on account of the death of his mother, Mrs. M. L Hoffman. The taking of a new census for Durham is about to be com pleted. The census for the city proper shows that we have with in the city limits something over 20,000 people, and when the people that live out near Dur ham, in the suburbs, are added to these figures Durham will show a population of about 30,000 people. $:50 no i 127 50 ; Salaries jwr month. A Bill entitled an Act to authorize the Board of Commissioners of Durham County to issue Bonds in the sum of Three Hundred Thousand ($300,000) Dollars to build, macadamize and improve the public roads of said County. The Generallv Assembly of North Carolina do Enact: Section 1. That for the purpose of building, km ding, macadamizing and otherwise Improving the pub'ic roads of Durham county the board of com missioners of said county is hereby authorized, empowered and directed to Issue bonds of the said county to an amount not exceeding three hundred thousand ($':oo,000) dollars in denom inations not exceeding one thousand (Jl.OoO) dollars, bearing interest from date thereof at not exceeding the rate of four and one-half per centum per annum with the Interest coupons at tached payable semi-annually at such time and place as may be directed by said board of county commission era, such ttniids to be of bucIi form and tenor, and transferable in such way, and the principal thereof paya ble at such time or timts. not exceed ing thirty days from the date thereof, and at pueh place or p'aces as the said board of county commissioners may determine and the said board of county commissioners may divide the said issue into three series, provided! that none ef the bonds authorized by this act shall be disposed of either by sale, i-vobansp. hypothecation or otherwise, for less price than their face value. Section 2 Such bru.ds shall be sign ed by the chairman of the said board of commissioners and attested by the treasurer of said county and shall; bear the corporate seal of said coun ty. And the coupons attached to each bond shall bear the number of the bond as wet! as the number of the coupon and shall be executed either by the slanins; by the chairman of the board of county commissioners and treasurer of the county or with their lithograph signatures.
