The New Telephone Eate Came, up for
Discussion Tuesday Nignt.
The Merchants Association of
this city met in regular session
Tuesday night. & Besides the
egular business, two matters of
special importance was discussed
the telephone rates and hotel
accommodations. .
In discussing the telephone rate
he merchants concluded not to
make any kick on the price
charged for business phones, but
to ask the company to hold to the
old rate for residence phones.
n reaching this conclusion the
act that the rate in Raleigh for
residence phones is only $1.50,
Wilmington. $2, Charlotte, $1.50,
and Asheville, $2, was consid
ered. The attorney for the mer
chants was instructed to fight the
matter out if no agreement was
reached .between him and the
telephone people.
Since the destruction of Hotel
Carrolina Durham has been in
ad shape for hotel accommo
dation. This matter was brought
before the meeting of the mer
chants Tuesday night, and a
committee was appointed to go
before the city aldermen to ad
vise to see if something could not
be done to secure better hotel
accommodations for Durham.
There is some talk of a new
hotel, but as yet no active steps
have been made to secure such a
place. Now that the merchants
have taken up the matter it is
hoped that soon Durham will
have a nice hotel for the accom
modation of travelers.
