Vn unusual case attracted at-

Mr. V. S. Bryant appearing
for the prosecution took the ser
ious ground that the girl must be
in trouble and that there is evi
dence that she has been threat
ened. It was brought out that
he owns a pistol and a small
thirst for firewater. From the
father and the girl it was learned
that Tilley has sent other letters
and that this is not the first time

Arrested for Beating His Wile.
Bob Go odloe was arrested Fri
day night, for beating his wife.
The evidence so far is that Good
loe beat his wife umercifully and
left her to do the best she could.
The information was brought to
the officers and Goodloe was
placed in jail, while the woman
was carried to Lincoln hospital.
The case was to have been
tried Saturday, but was post
poned to await the development
of the condition of the woman in
the hospital, who is said to be in
a serios condition. The treat
ment the woman received at the
hands of her husband was said
to be brutal in the extreme, and
from her condition it was a case
of attempt to end her life.

The home of Mr. J. A. Allen.
of West Durham, was saddened
a few days ago by the death
of his little ttrand-dauzhter.
Bessie May Allen.
The child came to Durham
about ten days before on a visit
with her mother, Mrs J. J. Allen.
Dyphtheria developed and she
died on the exact date o! her
father's death two years ago.
The child was exceptionally
bright for one of only six years
and in the Sunday schools she
was a favorito of the teachers
and the tauzht. The funeral
services were conducted by Rev.
O. W. Triplett and the burial
followed in Maplewood.

cult to get at, as the fire seemed
to be liet ween the floor and over
head ceiling in the basement and
the smoke was such that it was
out of the question to see what
was happening. However, by
continued effort and much water.
the firemen soon had this blaze
out. but not before the entire
store and contents had suffered
destruction. The loss to this
firm was about the same as to
the Holladay studio but they
were fortunate enough to have
some insurance.
The origin of both fires is
mystery. The first fire occurred
early in the evening and the
store of Trakas & Co. was not
affected at all, but the origin of
the latter fire is said to have
been from some other cause
than sparks from the first.
The total loss by the two fires
will between $15,000 and $18,000
with possibly $10,000 insurance.

small frame building, the resi

away was burning, the brisk
