The evidence so far is that Good loe beat his wife umercifully and left her to do the best she could. The information was brought to the officers and Goodloe was placed in jail, while the woman was carried to Lincoln hospital. The case was to have been tried Saturday, but was post poned to await the development of the condition of the woman in the hospital, who is said to be in a serios condition. The treat ment the woman received at the hands of her husband was said to be brutal in the extreme, and from her condition it was a case of attempt to end her life. Bab) Dies. The home of Mr. J. A. Allen. of West Durham, was saddened a few days ago by the death of his little ttrand-dauzhter. Bessie May Allen. The child came to Durham about ten days before on a visit with her mother, Mrs J. J. Allen. Dyphtheria developed and she died on the exact date o! her father's death two years ago. The child was exceptionally bright for one of only six years and in the Sunday schools she was a favorito of the teachers and the tauzht. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. O. W. However, by continued effort and much water. the firemen soon had this blaze out. but not before the entire store and contents had suffered destruction. The loss to this firm was about the same as to the Holladay studio but they were fortunate enough to have some insurance. The origin of both fires is mystery. The first fire occurred early in the evening and the store of Trakas & Co. was not affected at all, but the origin of the latter fire is said to have been from some other cause than sparks from the first. The total loss by the two fires will between $15,000 and $18,000 with possibly $10,000 insurance. SMALL FIRE IN HAYT!. The fire companies were called out Monday to Hayti. where a small frame building, the resi dence of Alex Moore, was on fire.
