It again becomes my duty to
chronicle the sad news of. the
death of our neighbor, Mrs. S.
II. Clayton, vvha passed away
Sunday, December the 2Gth, as
in a dream to be awakened on
eternity's shore- Mrs. Clayton
has been a sufferer for a long
time of that dreadful disease,
consumption and while she bore
up bravely shs at last , gave up
t its advances. In her demise
the community loses a good,
kind neighbor, the husband a
faithful wife,' and the children
a kind and loving mother. She
left four sons, Messrs. Willie,
David, Bun and Dewey, and one
daughter. Miss Anna, who with
their father have the heart felt
sympathy of the whole coramun
ity. The funeral services were
conducted at Mt. Hermon church
by Rev. Mr. Haroby, of Ken
tucky, after which the interment
took place at the church.
Sleep on mother dear
Free from pain and sorrow,
Now we drop a silent tear
But with thee willbe tomorrow.
For a year is but a day
Whre thou art reclining
So Christ does not to us say
Peace.be calm, quit thy re
pining.
So Then does draw us near -To
that eternal shore, .
Where lovinjr mother dear
We will b with thee evermore.
Rev. Mr. fimby and family,
of Kentucky, have been visiting
Mrs, Hamby's mother and
father, Mr. and Mrs. A. A.
Lynch, during tbe holidays, but
have returned to their home.
Mr. Hamby preaehei one of the
best sernttms -we have ever heard,
while here.
Mr. and Mrs. Solomon Hester
had a little visitor to take up her
abode at their heme on the 23 of
December. We haven't heard
whether they made her welcome
and agreed to give her hoard and
lging for a limited time or not,
but as that is customary we sup
pose they did.
Am glad to note that Fletcher
Garrard continues to improve.
This writer took a trip over
the country this last week ty
pulling the cord over a shuck
burner and? made such a, rapid
transit that his ears were frost
bitten, but as they are quite
large it would take a days' in
spection to find the place.
We are very sorry that one of
our good neighbors, Mr. John
Whitfield and family, have mov
edto West Durham, but wish
them much happiness in their
new home.
C Klein, of Raleigh, visited
Mr. John Micol during the holi
days.
There wasa Httledisputebytwo
big men a few days ago. Messrs.
Jim Crabtree and Jim Cook.
Cook has his biscuit cooked and
Crabtree submitted and paid for
the cooking.
All the churches around this
section had Christmas trees or
treats, which were well a tended
considering the weather.
Willie Jones and family, of
Hillsboro, and Rollin Jones and
family of Greensboro, visited the
family of S. T. Jones during the

" lor Two Years More. '::"
At the joint meetingr of the
city aldermen and county com
missioners last Monday at the
court house,, Mr. R. H. Sykes
was re-elected . to the office ;of
Recorder for the next term "of
two years.
Much Interest had been mani
fested upon the part of quite a
number of people over the re
sults of this meeting. In some
quarters dissatisfaction had
arisen, and while there was no
avowed candidate for the posi
tion to succeed Mr. Sykes. there
was talk of his being daf-ated.
However, when the vuiewaa
taken by ballot he was elected,
receiving8 votes, while Mr. P.
C. Graham received 5.
Mr. R. A. Harris wasr elected
clerk of the court receiving the
same number of votes that Mr.
Sykes received, while Mr. J. A.
Woodall, wao announced himself
only a few days ago, received
the same vote as had been given
Mr. Graham.
The result of . the joint meet
ing was jefst what thoae well in
formed as to county and city af
fairs had been expecting, , cs
there was a feeling that each
snould be elected to a regular
term of office and given an op
portunity to serve-same.
