BRYANT. The Charlotte News ofTues ay carried an account of the eath of Mr. Henry Bryant, the ather of Mr. Victor S. Bryant, f this city, Sunday last The Senior Mr. Bryant was a 'rovidence. Mecklenburg coun y farmer. . The item from the )aper conveys these facts. Mr. Bryant was stricken with jaralysis a year or more ago, md since that time had been :onfined to the house. His con iition varied, at times being bet er; at times his death was al most momentarily expected. He ore his affliction with patience ind fortitude. His decline to wards the last was gradual. HOLT. , A message was rcceivefl here ast night telling o! the death of Hr. E. P. Holt, of Willardxville. Mr. Holt had been critically ill evcral days and since Monday hero was offered no hope for him. He began t with typhoid reveraud developed Into pneu monia. His father attended him hrouithout the illness and was (sainted hy phykicians elsewhere. Mr. Holt was the son of Dr. E. ,!. Holt, of Willardsville, and has numerous relatives here and Hue whore, lie had visited Dur ham often and was known well o the people of this and other calitics. News was received in the city uesdny of the dith in Norfolk. Va., of Henry Plarz, formerly After Lingering Illness a Good Woman Answers the Final Summons. After a lingering illness, cover ing a period of more than ten months, Mrs. . Alice E. Carlton, wife of Frank M. Carlton, died at her home on McMannen street last Friday afternoon. Mrs. Carlton was born in Ala mance county March 22, 1856, and was 54 years of age four days ago. In 1880 she moved with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel H. Turrentine, to the city and had lived here since. She was married November 10, 1892, to Mr. F. M. Carlton, who survives her Besides her hus band she leaves a sister, Mrs. Annie N. Piper, Mr. W. D. Tur rentine, a brother, Mrs. J. S. Measley, a sister. Mis. P. H. Massey, of Durham county, a sister, Mrs. A. G. Elliott, of this city, another sister, and Mrs. W. R. Israel, Hartford Connecti cut, a sister. Since December of last year, Mrs., Carlton has been attended by her niece, Miss Lillian Mas sey, who resigned her position as teacher in High . Point to come here and comfort her aunt during her last hours- The funeral took place from the home Saturday afternoon, conducted by the pastor, Rev. G. T. Adams, of Trinity church. after which the interment tcok place in Maplewood cemetery. Yoana San Kills EimselL Henry Stanbury, of East Dur ham, 23 years of age, committed suicida last Sunday afternoon by taking carbolic acid. He was found Juriday afternoon about four o'clock, but it was too late for the deadly poison had al ready done its worje. . The boy was feeble minded, but was considered harmless, and the catne of his death is said to have been because he be came despondent ovvr acts of dissipation. , The funeral and burial tool; place Monday afternoon. v Executire Committee to Keel Chairman Brawley, f the Democratic Executive committee has sent out notice of a meeting of the committee to 'be held next Saturday, April the 2nd. " The call will be the beginning of the democratic speculation as to who will occupy the field for the next two years. , In addition to the regular county officers this year the clerk of court will be elected. The opposition to the present councy officers has not set up claim at this writing and the future may hold in store some surprises along this line. Barbee. ,t After the exercises dinner was served on the grounds and the Urge crowd present enjoyed a picnic dinner, with which was served Brunswick stew in abund aiice. It was a pleasant day fcr all that attended the exercises and partook of the dinner. Mr. A. L. Fletcher, who has accepted the position of city editor of the Daily Sun, has ar rived in the city. While the new machinery is not installed, it is expected that Mr. Fletcher will begin work at onco and get fa y , , To Erect a Monument. -The Woodmen of the World, of this city, have decided to take steps to erect a monument at the Bennett place near Funston siding on the Southern railway about five miles west of Durham. This historic place at which on the 26th day of April 1865 was the sceije of the signing of agree ments between Generals Johnston and Sherman, can be seen from the Southern train as it passes. This log house, in which the agreement was signed, has been enclosed by a board structure to protect it, and is now the proper ty of Mr. B. L. Duke, ' of this city. The Woodmen propose to erect, a structure here in the shape of a marble shaft that will mark it so that all who pass may know just where the place is and the historic interest that sur rounds it. To this end a com mittee . has been appointed to prepare a program and look into other matters relative to the car rying out of their plans outlined and have the marble marker erected and suitable, exercises on the anniversary, which will be next April the 26th. 1 County Census Takers. ; County-census-takers -have been appointed as follows: J. Hower ton vs. the City of Durham for damage to his property on ac count the placing of a sewer was threshed out in the superior court this week and Mr- Hower ton was awarded the full amount of damages asked for, $400. No notice of appeal has been made at this writing. Another amusing case was heard this week in which R. L. Jordan was suing for possession of his land. The full ' details of the matter were presented to the jury and they deliberated over it all night and finally decided the case in favor of Mr. Jordan. Many amusing things were brought out during the trial. . Other cases in the court are being heard,' there being little' general interest manifested by the public. The Thomas Lipscombe place has been sold, the purchase price being $3,765, and Mr. W. D. Vickers being the purchaser. The sale is subject to the usual The Lafayette base ball team that played Trinity college last Thursday and Friday winning one game and losing one, was en tertained by the faculty and stu dents of t'.ie Southern Conserva tory of Music Friday, and spent a very pleasant evening.
