Thursday aa H-nderaon'a gw.t day the day when ihr niouuutent : commemorating tne Confederate aoloier was unveiled and ib public permitted, lor the first tune, to look upon its beautiful out lines. Not alone Henderson, but all Vance county, has been looking forward to this day and there was a great crowd in town to witnes the unveiling. The day itaelf was ideal, the sun shining brightly and the air being warm enough for all to witness the inter esting exercises. There have been fully 3.000 people gathered in f,ront of the court house where the monu ment stands, directly opposite the residence of Mr. A. C. Zollicoffer. The program for the unveiling was an elaborate one and every feature was carried out successfully. Addresses were made by Governor Kitchin and General Julian S. Carr, commander of the North Carolina United Confederate veterans and others, the day closing with a banquet given by the Daughters of the Con federacy. It was at 11:30 that the great crowd gathered on the court bouse areen, and, filling the street, heard the sound of approaching music and head ed by Rev. J. T. B. Hoover, comman der of Henry L. Wyatt Camp. United Confederate veterans. . who walked with Mis Jessica Smith, daughter of the designer of the Stars and Bars, there came the veterans of Henry L. Wyatt Camp and visiting , veterans, there being some 150 present during tbe exercises. Next came automobiles and carriages containing the speakers, membera of the Daughters of the Con federacy and Invited guests, these passing through the porch of the Zol licoffer residence to the handsomely decorated stand at its side, the deco rations being of Confederate flags on b ranches " ot North Carolina pices. Here Governor Kitchin stood and re viewed the p.'oce&skm of pupils of the Henderson graded schools, Jn charge of Superintendent J. T. Alderman and the teachers, there being in line nearly six hundred children bearing small Confederate flags. As these passed the Harriet Coronet Band.
