The next point which seemed to require attention, was Fort Lauderdale, near which the Indians were assembled in considerable numbers, and an attack was apprehended iid ou that post, but Capt. Mayo reached there with two armed barges, before the Indians were prepared for hostility. The Cillant and efficient commander of Fort Lauderdale, Lieut. Thompkins, has exnressed in a verv handsome manner his oblio-ations to Cnnt, Mayo, for the prompt interposition which ar rested the murderous purpose of the savages, and also signified his sense of the manner in which Lieuts. Davis, of the navy, and Sloan, of the Marines, have aided in all that con cerns the welfare of the post. Capt. M., we are informed, has made what appeared the most judicious disposition of his crew and officers; LieuL Davis, with two barges, and upwards of thirty men being left at New River; Lieut. Sloan, with as many Marines, on the Miami River, and Passed Midshipman Thompson, with an arm ed barge and crew at Key Biscay ne. The labours of a summer campaign in the swamps and everglades of South Florida have had its effects upon the officers and crew of the Poinsett; ihey have suffered from disease, and among the officers, three have found their graves in Florida, Purser Siaeum, Passed Midshipmen Waddell and Smith. Experi ence has proved, what by many was predicted, that the Poiesett is entirely unsuitable to the station she has been on, and the boat has ope rated as a check upon the efficiency of the physical force she bore; The labours to sea men of procuring fuel from a Florida pine barren under a . summer's sun, goaded by poisonous insects, has been not among the least of the sufferings of the crew, and three or four weeks of this continued and painful effort, certain fy done atrstfe found opportunity to do iu the Florida war more then was anticipa ted from her by those who knew the difficul- lies she would be called on to encounter, and her crew have not been permitted to fatten upon the bread of idleness PROFESSORS ESPY AND OLMSTED. The Leed3 Murcury, a British paper, mentions as among the most extraordinary inventions of modern times, a machine for manufactur ing broad or narrow woolen cloths, without spinning or weaving! The inventor is an American, and appears to have a certain prospect of realizinsr an ample fortune bv the sale of his patent. Patterns of the cloth, as well as drawings of the machinery, have been shown to many of he principal merchants and manufacturers none of whom express a doubt but that the machinery is capable of maiting ordinary cloth.?, winch rcouire a good substance. Means are already, taken to introduce this machine into Belgium. If, on trial, it succeed.?, twenty thousand pounds will be paid for the patent right in that kingdom. " EMPLOYMENT. There is no feeling so bad as that of la ziness, (don't laugh, reader, for we are not now speaking from experience,) and there is no situation so undesirable as that wherein we are unemployed. Man's faculties of body and mind were not given to remain idle and passive such a life would be a kind of non entity; though it might not be a life of suffer ing, yet it could not be one f enjoyment. iv . 1- . J-f can awaken desire. If, then, life is desira ble, an active exercise of all its powers is de sirable. We need not wish ourselves exempt from the necessity of labour, so called, it might as well be called exercise for our sup port. This is wisely ordained for our happi ness, and he who violates this law of natuie, suffers the consequences of the violation as much as to go counter to any other ordination of Providence.
