TELE - WOBTH - C AROILINI AN ;1 ' i 1 i J r T. - t- f 1, Poetical. - From the South Carolinian. To my Brother in Tenia Oh, dearest brother, quick, return, And speed thee on the eagle's wing; . For our bad spirits ill discern The glories of the opening spring. And Carolinia's sunny skies. Since thou art gone, less bright appear; In vain my lowly spirit tries To seek for bliss and thou not near. And towards far Texas oft I gaze, When sinks the selling sun to rest; When gild the clouds, his farewell rays, I sigh, for thou loved'st evening best. More I love eve, now many a mile My brother's distant far the while. The verdant fields we used to roam, The streamlet's side, the flowery dell, And all the witching scenes of home, Twine round me a resistless spell. Have they no power to charm thee back? Dost thou the prairie's green prefer, To home, where, save from care's attack, Thoul't sweetly rest, dear traveller? Ah! home-is sure the seat of bliss, If ever found in worlds like this. Yet thou hast roved or land more fair, , More blessed than e'er tliese eyes have -i seen; 'Neath brighter skies breathed purer air, Crossed Sylvan floods and prairies ttreen Hast gazed on mountain? high and blue, Camanches, roaming far and wide; Ctill'd lovely flowers of every hue; Viewed Colorado's flowing tide; But mid these joys, does ere distress Come o'er thee, and thy soul oppress? May magic fancy aid thy sihf, That show thee all the jys that cling Round home, and every dear delight. To win thee back from wandering. Come back, then, brother! eyes grow bright, When lipsfcpeak of thy wished return. Dear brother, cease thy wandering! Oh speed thee home on eagle's wing! L. course this is a touch of the new-born Harrison zeal which is now coursing the length and breadth of the land, and feeding upon hard ci der and crackers. The Whigs there have had heir Harrison meetings, their Harrison nans; nd they have even had duly recited tneir.nar- rison Song. And lo! they now. behold a genu ine Harrison result! A Democratic triumph! Arain we say "Old Bunker Hill will be true to the last." A contrast has been sneeringly drawn be tween General Harrison and Mr. Van Buren durinc the war. It has been said, that whiUt the General was fighting- the battles ol his country, the Civilian was doing nothing, laying on a bed of roses, frc. c. Is this true Ihe war was declared in June. 1812 and ended in lanuary, 1815. Gen. Harrison resigned his . . ....I Kit - a A 1 . commission, on the inn lviay, iois ana ne retired to private hie, leaving more persevering spirits to fig-ht the the battles of his country. f ortunately lor her glory lienerat Jackson was appointed in his place. He fought the battle of New Orleans. He fought to the end of the war: and crowned his country with distinction, and carved out his way to the first honors in the Republic. But what became ot JVlr. Van Buren.' He did not have a military commission, it is true; but he was engaged in the mostimportnnt labors. He distinguished himself at home. He was battling with the enemies of the war, in the Legislature of New York rousing the peo ple by tits addresses; urging the measures ol defence, for one ( the most exposed States in the Union. No New York statesman could have shown more zeal and ability or, have done more, than he did. His energy rose will the occasion and he exerted it to the en J of the The retired General, or the bold active States man? Richmond Enquirer. naroTica. April 18th, 1810. 6) 3t. Extract from JMr. Benton's speech on the Independent Treasury Bill. Holland is another subject for the study of the American statesman. A small ten itory of eleven thousand square miles, lying below the level of the sea drawing fifty feet water as Hudibras rhymes it and walled in to keep the sea out; a soil of clay, sand, and loam; a disadvantageous climate; without a mine, a fossil, a stone, a mineral, or a forest tree: this little country, so small in itself, and so little favored by nature, besides the pre eminence which it attained in agriculture, manufactures, and commerce; in military and naval warfare; in learning and in science; in the useful and in the fine arts; besides all this, that little country constituted itself the SPECIE WARE-HOUSE OF EUROPE AND AMERICA! lendiug gold to all na tions; to emperors, kings, and princes; to cities, states, and corporations; to this city even, which, with its six millions of chartered Bank capital, was unable to pay back either principal or interest; and must have been sold upon thirty days' notice at public auction, if the United States had not assumed the debt. This is Holland; a country which has no paper money banks, but which has mer chants who are able to save the Bank of Eng land, and the Bank of the United States, from breaking like glass; merchants who are able to lend gold by the million at four per centum per annum, unue we give two per cent, a month for depreciated paper; who are able to purchase every dry goods store in such a State as Missouri, (St. Louis included.) pay down for them in gold, then set fire to them and burn them up, and never know that they had lo3t any thing except by change of figures at the toot ot the balance sheet. I his is Hol land, and her merchants, who never' saw a bank note; and yet we have dry good mer chants in Missouri, whose stores a real strong man could run a stick through, and hang over his shoulder, and walk off with; and who undertake to persuade people that they can do no business at all can credit nobody, and must sue every body unless they have a branch of the United States Bank to accom modate them with paper credits. Yes, sir; this is Holland, the specie mag azine of Europe and America; the meadow and the garden of Europe; the happy home of a rich, moral, and tranquil population of 200 to the square mile, and which has made itself what it is, not by builduig paper credit banks, and borrowing money on the resources ot posterity, but by INDUSTRY, ECONO MY, HARD MONEY, and SHORT CREDIT. From the Baltimore Post. A. Salute from Banker Hill Z The Democrats of Chariestown elected their candidates for Town Officer? yesterday, by an average majority of ONE HUNDRED AND S1JL VU1KS! ii me jjosion Atlas finds "no cause to mur- mer alter what it has recently said in relation to this election, it must possess the heart which feels extremely grateful lor the smallest favors. But a few days since it talked in this style: "The Whigs can overthrow the Loco Foeoa in Chariestown, if they will make a vigorous ef fort. Let it be done. Chariestown redeemed, the enemy will be thrown into confusion. The Whigs are stronger there than they are aware of. The working-men of that town are begin ning to understand the principles ol those who hare so long deceived them, and many a vote .will be thrown quietly and silently for the Whig ticket by men upon whom the Loco r ocos have a confident reliance. The Bunker Hill Aurora, too, gave notice to their "l.-iends abroad that Ihe VVhigs ol Ctior- letovn "were waking ud:" and that ihev were adopting such measures as would "produce I more activity and energy in the party." -Of I HOUSE AND LOT For Sale.
