THE WORTH - CAROLINIAN . Poetical. From the Churchman. The following lines, which we cut from a late number of the Churchman, we believe are from the pen of the young poet Cox. At all events they are superlatively good. March. Man goeth to hia long home. EccL xii. 6. t. Marc h march ma rchl Making sounds as they treed, Ho-ho! how ihey step, Going down to the dead! Every atride, every tramp, Every footfall is nearer; And dimmer each lamp. As darkness grows drearer; But ho.' how they march, Making sounds as ihey tread; Ho-ho how they step, Going down to the dead II. March march march Making sounds as they tread, Ho-ho how they laugh, Going down to the dead How they whirl how they trip, How they smile, how they dally, How blithsome they skip, Going down to the valley; Oh ho, how they march, Making sounds as they tread, Ho ho, how they skip, Going down to the dead lit. March ma rch ma rch! Earth groans as they treadt Each carries a skull; Going down to the dead Every stride every stamp Every footfall is bolder, 'Tis a skeleton's tramp, With a skull on his shoulder But ho, how he steps With a high tossing head, Each clay-colored bone, Going down to the dead! . C. From the Richmond Enquirer More Whls AVJxpper: Bewre. We would caution the Public, from this time henceforth to the day of the Election, to beware of the humbugs ot tne opposition One of their favorite tricks is, to claim A. B C, &c, as having deserted Mr. Van Buren, and ioined the ranks of the Opposition. .... ... .1 Will it be believed, mat among uese pi denn ed converts, are the "Old Hero" himself (aye, Gen. Jackson,) and the late determined, spirited and worthy delegate of the county of Hanover. (OT course it is all trick, and humbug!) The monstrous assertion noticed and unmasked in the following article from Tuesday's Globe, had its tun in this City for 24 hours and we could name some of the most distinguished Whigs who seemed anx ious to blazon forth: VOCATION OF THE LEADERS OF FEDERALISM. Extract of a letter from Petersburg, Va., to a member of Congress. "Billy Gilliam passed through here this morning, and I learn that he said that Gen. Jackson had written to Blair and Rives that he had given up Mr. Van Buren and had come out in favor of General Harrison. It was a matter of much rejoicing with the Whigs, while waiting for the mail this morn ing. None of the Van Buren party believed iL Billy Gilliam said if the city had been burnt down the excitement growing out of it would not have been equal to that produced by the old General's letter." "It is unnecessary for us to contradict this cross falsehood put afloat by the agents r.f th Federal faction. Every member of Congres3 with whom the venerable ex-President corresponds, (as well as ourselves,) knows that the ruling feeling of his bosom is ihe wish for the re-election of Mr. Van Bu ren. All his letters to them, and to us, ex press the confident hope and desire for Mr. Van Buren's le-election- not merely for the sake of the individual, whom he loves and admires, but for the sake of the great finan cial, commercial, and currency reform, which he considers essentially dependent upon the separation of the Government from banks; and for the sake of our free institutions, which he considers dependent on the prevalence of the Democratic party." Ulobe. After this monstrous whapper, what may we not expect from the slangwbangers of the Op position? Can any report beat this egre gious falsehood about General Jackson? One more! We have to expose another most detestable trick of the Federal Party. We have before us a copy of "The Harrison Almanac for 1S41." It teems with the most extravagant anecdotes of the Tippecanoe Hero, embellished with some of the coarsest engravings, to set off his martial deeds and agricultural occupations. We have of course the log cabin, cider barrel, Stc, &c. But the reader may form some idea of the falsity of its statements, by the following article, which we copy literally from its 32d page. We beg the Public to read it and then judge what little truth is to be expected from these People and how many tricks we are to an ticipate from their mendacious ingenuity: "All but the Crown. The following des cription of Mr. Van Buren's regal pomp and splendor -was furnished by the Washington CorresDondent of the Boston Atlas, under date of January 14th, 1S40, the truth of which has never been denied by the Globe, or any other Administration paper. "Mr. Van Buren is evidently a vain man, and his vanity lies within a narrow circle. He is fond of pomp and show, and the trap- wnturm of rower, as all bis actions declare H dresses in the heieht of fashion, and his equipage is the most magnificent that dashes through the Avenues of this magnificent city. His public dinner parties are also splenoia beyond description. 1 he table is tricked out with all the ornaments tnai me ricuesi jewel lers can produce. The centre is garnished with a pyramid of fantastic finery, and a complete service of gold plate has recently .... . i f .1 WUa been added to tne lurnuure oi wm itku tn dazzle the eves of visitors. This service' comprises knives, forks and spoons of gold dishes oj gold, ana urns oj gota. Who can wonaer mai uie court jgupuouio with TimonJs silver on their lips, should sneer at log cabins and hard cider." Gold Svoons. Forks, Dishes, and Urns! A fantastic plateau and a complete service of gold plate, recently added to the furniture of the W hite Mouse, magnmceni equipage, auu most costly dinners. Mr. Andrews ot Ken tucky, (a Whiz has lately nailed this base falsehood about ihe gold spoons, and gold ser vice, to the counter, which was repeated on the floor of the H. of R. by Ogle, (another Whnrt from Pennsylvania. A falsehood it u an infamous falshocd, every word of it for. there is no eold service in the W bite House not even a gold spoon. Cut the nlate.au. the SDOons (once slightly washed, and nnw nearlv worn off as any body with half an eye may see,) have been m the White House since the days ot Ko. JMonroe. rui there is not a piece of gold furniture in the whole establishment. Mr. Lincoln, (a Whig member of Massachusetts,) has, much to his credit, stripped off the mask frorn Ogle's cal umnies, and shows how little furniture of any description, has been bought for Mr. Van Buren. But notwithstanding the grossness of these falsehoods, here it is introduced mto the "Har rison Almanac," and will it be believed, franked, and circulated, by Whiff Senators and Representatives, men who call them selves ''honorable" and yet know that there is not a word of truth in the whole story What are the People to expect from such i party? What truth or what principle? W must speak plain upon the subject we must . .L Li- ' u u. caution tne puotic agaiusi sutu uuaiuuus uum bus. Look out for more whappers. Of the same character, is another pamphlet, noticed and unmasked by the Georgia Argus, which is headed "Please read and circu late" and professing to be a sketch of Gen. Harrison's life. The Argus says, that "the pamphlet as it was originally written ends ou the 14th page, nearly at the bottom of the first column. That was intended for circu lation at the North, and not one word is said about his Missouri vote, &c. The balance of the pamphlet was added to suit the South." Such are the tricks of these men and such is the double-faced attitude, in which they ex hibit their Veiled Prophet! But these tricks will recoil tremendously upon him and hi party.
