No trjaller how useful they may have been, what years of toil they may have endured, c find them tit last dismissed without re;r t, and sotj fo -a few shillings, or what their meie skin, flesh," hones, and other parts, are woith. Worn usually lo skin ' nnrl bc-Oj;, they come in strings ol" twelve or twentyj tir? hudjled into n slablo whoie (hey c-ftt.ttoi slit, or left iu ihe open air, tied to (he enreasao of those that ha e just met their fate. A grenf number of horses living and dead, Are brought lo Motitfaucon annually ; the winter sensuti, when the poor cannot keep them, beinj; most pioduclive in this respect. 1'y a cnlcutatioo made for 1S27, if was found that thirty-live came to tho slaughter houe daily, making a whole of 12,7S.ri. Three-fourths of them ciinie ia life. As, in the same year, the t't:f number of horses in Paris amounted to about 20,500, not less lhau rive-eights seem (hen lo perish auimuHy. A deduct iou must be made, however, for the hrsea bought iu tha districts arouud ihe city. Iu auy case tho number of victims is iirimense. Four different methods nre used ut Moni fiiucon for kiliittg the horses. Ono is by in jecting air into nu open vein, n tedious, aud little used though cleanly process ; a.- sr-cond i.s by piercing the spinal marrow in ihe neck; a third is to fcl! theaolrria! oo ihe hefd, us is done wilh oxen ; nod a fourth operalioo is to slab tho animal in ihe .chest. One melan choly sight usually follows the deaths of two or three horses; The stoutest of the victims next to fall, is made to"dcav the ffCf ly slain bodies to the scenes of their ulterior opera tions. The hair of the mane and tail is removed , before deaih, but the wretched hacks have usually lost or been stripped of these ppend ages before corning to Moutfaiicon. When accumulated in quantities, the hair is sold lo saddlers and hair makers. The skins of the horses are of ccfirse srdd loJanper. Of the blood of the horses no use i.s made, though men of scieuce have recommended its em ployment in the manufacture of Prussian blue, for which purpose ox blood is in great demand. The flesh is ihe nexl point. In 1739, an ordinance was revived inierdieting its sale ii Paris as human food. During the time. ol'. the revolutionary scarcity, however, horse flesh was largely used in the dpitai, many who took iiu othef animal food for si. months, felt not the slightest injury front it. -J The opeu use of it did not cense till 1SQ3-.-In 1S11, a time of scarcity, many bulcheisr were caught making maiket of it ; and soon , afterwards, tho medical tflreu." having, declared the flesh of a sound horse wholesome, a per- ' mission was given to sell it openly, but only in given places. Withdrawn in 1S14, (his permission was renewed in 1816, and t;ii holds good. In feeding animals, and as manure, a large portion of the Montlauooti horse carcases is ackuowleu'gly. .employed ; but it is also believed no little quanfly s sold lo the poor, without their own knowlerfger As for the numerous workmen at Moritfair con, they live on nothing else, and thev ihr ivc upon it. It perhaps strengthens their nerves for iheir disagreeable business, as it spirited up" our hardy ancestors of the north to (heir human butcheries. The use of it amongst these latter nations only ceased on their convcrsioti . to Christianity, as is proved by existing papal bulls. However, Denmark has latterly re lumed to its old habits, being Ihe first Kurcv pean nation that has authorized the sale of horse flesh among the otdinary contents of the shambles. A traveller relates, also, ho tasted some excellent smoked hif5 on diu ing with the Tartarian Khan, Krim-GnetJdv Baron .Larrey, moreover, tells us that the French army, in various campaigns, were not only sustained well by such food, but wero even seemingly cured of scorbutic dis ease. From different parts of animals killed at -Moii'l'aueoii, glue, oil, and other marketable commodities are produced, and the ehoes meet with a ready sale at tho cutlers and oth ers. In short, nothing is lost; for it is even a trade to gainer the larvre as food for fowls ; and thus the clegaut animals which once pranced proudly in the Champs de Mars and . at the gay fetes of the French metropolis, are sent to Moutfaucon, and put to the basest of purposes. Yain-eloriotis men are the scorn- of wiso men, the admiration of fools, the idol of para sites, and the slaves of their own vaunts. fio man was ever broken by advetsily that was not ftwt betrayed by posteiity. Suspicions among thoughts are Hke rats n mo tig birds they ever fly by twilight. To live by one mao's will is the cause of many men's misory.
