The following is, taken fiom the original
mnmiscilpt of Col. Guilfoid Dudley, n Revo
lutionary officer. He was a native of Caro
line county. An interesting account of the
battle of Camden from bi pen, was published
dming; the last year :
" The upper pails of Noith Carolina, s
far Ve.-t as iis p' pulaiioii then exiendetf,
were settled by a bardy lace of men, mostly
emigrnn's from the back pait. ofPennsy Ivauia,
Maryland aud New Yotk, aud were chiefly
either what are called Scotcb-Iiiah or Dutch,
their descendants tenaciously retaining iho
broad dialect and phraseology of their respec
tive anccstiy. Aa lands could be easily ac
quiied, they were almost uuivetsally farnieis,
there being few tradesmen among them- aud
no slaves. They diove their owti wagons to
market aud performed all soils of labor wilh
their own hands. They were dissenters front
the established Church, and weru nol easily
reconciled to the payment oftylhes tosuppott
ihe established clergy. These hardy back
woodsmen, whose hands were a rough as the
paws of a bear, from manual labor and all
sorts of drudgery, whenever any well-dressed
victim fell into their power, were in the habit
of nicely examining the palms of their hand?,
which if they found soil aud ductile aud the
backs fair and uuscorched by the sun, they
pronounced fhem gentlemen " unused to
work, who could live. without labor, and tnen
thev were sure to inflict stripes upon their
backs, in propoiliou to the softness of their
hands, alleging that h was such "gentlemen
who were the cause of their oppressions and
were maintained by the product of their labor
unjustly extotted from them. A singular in
stance of this kiud ol discipline or oideal hap
pened iu the morning of the battle of Alle
inauce. A small reconnoiteriug party of
Governor Tryou'a, consisting of three or four
young geutlemeu of the voluuteer cavalry
from Cape Fear, beiug seutttutto explore the
flanks of the enemy, happened to fall iu with
a strong patrole of the regulators." The
party was soon captuied aud-unhoused. Yen
geuuee waited upou them. Without any par
ley they had to uudeigo the nfoieaid ordeal.
Judgment went against thern, and flagellation
instantly oiisued, because there tvila no time
then for parleying, as the firing had commenc
ed bi twteu the advanced guard. But wheu
they came to examiue tho last culprit, they
found the matter rather dubious, for the palm
of his bnudd "were rather hard uud dry, aud
the bucks sun bum). Thev nevei iheles9 tuck
ed him cp wi;h his shiii off and gaie him thir
ty stripes on his naked bnck, ond ihe flagella
tor declared that if appearances had not beeu
a little in his favor, he would have given him
foity. Bui by this time the battle began to
rnge, and ihe leirified patrole ha.-lily left their
p boners to release themselves, and hastened
to their main body.
The incredulous will not believe thi anec
dote. Tho last sufferer whom I have just
mentiored, was a young gentleman of highly
respectable family and fortune, on Cope Fear,
aud no less a personage than afterwards a
lieutenant Colonel in. ihe Continental tine of
North Caiolina and Governor of that Stale.
1 became intimately acquainted wilh him iu
the course of the Revolutionary war, and ha
was my particular frieud. I had the whole
story fiorn his own lips about the close of the
war. lie observed thst the scars were still ou
his back, and that they would desceud with
him to the grave. He told me at the same
lime who his fellow-sufferers were. This
transaction and the usual practice of the ''re
gulators" on such occasions, I had long be
fore heard of, but as no names were mention
ed, 1 disbelieved the story, until I could uo
louder doubt its ttuth."

was out of sight.

A streak or Lightning. A Vermouter
owned a v-ry fine trotter, whose extraordinary
speed he. illustrated by the following anecdote:
I wa driving one day in a deatbon," he said,
"I oveitook a stranger who was walking tho
