Dinner to the Orange Volunteers- The Orange Voluuteers having been called together in this place on Saturday last, were invited by a portion of the citizens of town to pattake of a dinner at the Hillsborough House to be furnished by Air Robert Morris, the pro. prietor of that Hotel , which invitation, with i j? - iri- - . . ... -1 uioier-tiKo prompiucss, was accented. nile assembled at the Hotel, previous to the diuuer, the Voluntceis were biirfly addressed by Cad. When these gentlemen bad coududed their uddressos, the company repaired to the tables, which were spread with tate and neatness, and partook of an excellent dinner just such an one as suited the occasi'iu. Abundant i;ood cheer prevailed, and occasionally some good sentiments were throwu out in the shape of toasts. Hillsborough Recorder, OLD MECKLENBURG RIGHT SIDE UP THE SPIRIT of 75 YET ALIVE! Last Thursday was a proud day for the sous of old Meckieuburg. On that day, Capt. Caldwell, of our volunteers, addressed his company relative to the action of the Leg is lature in voting ten thousand dollars to the Re"iment, and the appointment of Field Offi cers by Gov. Graham. lie said he did not address them as whigs or democrats, but as iudepeudeut fieerneu of Meckleuburg, who bud voluuteered in a glorious aud patriotic cause. Although among the officers of the company, there were t be found the blood relations of Got. G., he felt well assured that alt would freely join in an expression of iu diguatioa at the treatment our volunteers has received at the bauds of the Legislature aud Governor. He concluded by offering the following Resolutions, which by aclarnmation, were adopted unanimously. So, that if Cols. Paiue and Fagg want men to command, they will have to get them elsewhere than iu Meck lenburg. Such men cau never command the sous of Mecklenburg on the Meld of b tt!e. But here are the Resolutions : Resolved, That we view the action of the Legislature, iu the passage of the law grant ing $10,000 to the North Caroliua Regiment of Volunteers, as a gross insult to the Volun teers requiting them, as it does, to endorse a lie upou their own government, and a stig ma of disgrace upon the cause iu which they are about to peril their lives, should they re ceive the money. Resolved, That we disdain to receive a cent of said appropriation-on any such terms; but huil it back, to be divided pro rata among the miserable partisans who helped to pass the law, to be divided according to grade, to be i emulated by the agency each man bad iu passing (he law. Resolved, That we regard ourselves as freemen, c.jp;ib!e of appreciating the service which we have Voluuteeied, aud also, of ap preciating the qualifications of suitable Field Officers, and that rather than march under commanders thrust upon us against our will, e now instruct our Captain to tender our Company to the Piesident in the Regular service, as a Company of Dragoous, for aud during the war. Meek. Jeff. Dreadful Homicide. An awful homi cide was committed in this county, about 16 miles south west of this place, ou Wednesday the 13th iust, by oue Speuce Reeve v upon the body of his sister. Reeves said he was going to Mexico, and threatened to take one of the horses with him, and went to the stable for the pu pose of getting it. His sister' fol lowed, to prevent him from taking the horse; aud uot returning within a reasonable time, her mother became uneasy, aud went tu the stable iu search of her. where she found her daughter with her head cut nearly olT, aud a culling knife lying by her side the instru ment, no doubt, with which the deed was pe rpetrated; and Spencer, the son' had gone off with oue of the horses. One of the neigh bors was immediately sent for, aud after asceitaiuing theeau.se of the alarm, he start in pursuit of Reeves, following him iu the di ection of Hillsborough. Upou reaching this place, he informed the Sheriff, who started ottt with two Deputies to search the town for him. He was soon arrested, and next morn ing was examined before two Justices of the Peace, and committed for trial, Utllsboro Recorder. Through the exeitions of our repesentative Col. Robt. W. Roberts, the secoud Regi meut of Mississippi Volunteers has been converted iuto u ritle regiment. "The mem bers will be allowed a Bowie knife as a side arm in addition to the rifle. JValchez Free 1 racier. We learn that Reuben Davis, of Monroe, is elected Colonel of the new regiment oi l Mississippi oluuteers; Capt. J. H. KilnaN rick, of Marshall, Lieut. Colonel; aud it was believed that Capt. A. A. Overton, of Panola, would be elected Major. HIGHLY IMPORTANT NEWS FROM THE SUUltl.
