Ihe Greenland whale ship, found himself be calmed among nn immense number vf ice bergs, in about 77 degrees of no'th latitude. On one side anu within a mile t his vessel. they were closely wedged together, and a succession of snow coloreel peaks appealed behind each other, as far as the eye could reach, showing that the ocean was complete ly blocked up in that quarter, and that it had probably been so for a long period of time. Captain VV arrcn did not leel alto 'eiher satisfied with his situation; but there btinr no wind he could not move one wv or the other, and he therefore kept a strict watch, knowing that he would be safe a otig as the icebergs continued in their res pective places. ' About midnight the w ind ro?e to a gale accompanied by thick showers of snow, while succession . of tremendous, thunderinc grinding and crashing noise, gave fearful evidence that the ice was in motion. 1 he vessel received violent shocks every moment, but the haziness of the atmosphere prevent ed tlose on board from discovering: in what direction the open water lay, or if there ac tually was any at all on eilher side of them. The night was spent in tackino as often as any cause of elanger happened to present it self, and in the morning- ihe strni abated, and Captain Warren found to his great joy that his ship had not sustained any strious injury. lie remained with surpnc, that the accumulated icebergs, which had on the preceding evening, binned an impenetrable barrier, had been separated and disarrang ed by the wind, ami in one place a canal of open sea weiund its course among them as far as the eye could discern. It was two miles bevond tlie entrance of this canal that a ship made its appearance about noon. The sun shone brightly at the time, and a gentle breeze blew from t he- north. At first some intervening icebergs prevented Captain Warren from distinctly seeing anything but her masts ; but he 'was struck with the strauge manner ia which her sails wrere disposed, and with the' dis mantle! aspect of , her yards and riggm?- L Volmc 7-x,llubel. 4J8 ""lT",uru 1U, le wind for a rfriur!o..gr ami then, grounding upon low ict-bfgs, reniuintd motionlrss. ' Cpt. Warren's curiosity vs KO much exeiied, thut he immediately leaped into hi boat with several seamen, and rowed towards her. On appf oachino;, he observing that, h r hull was miserably iveaihcr beaten, and not a soul appealed on deck, which "was cov ered with snow to a cnside'able depth. He hniled her crew several times ; but no answer was returned. Previous lo stepping onboard, an open port hole near the niiiu chains cyught bis eye, and on looking into it he precelvcd a man reclining bnck on a chair, with writing materials on n" table before him but tlie feebleness of the light m ule ever thing very indistinct. The pirty went upo deck, and having re moved the hatchway, which ihty found closed, they descended to the cabin. They fir t 'came to the ppart ment which Cepiain Warren viewed through ihe "i t hole. A tremor seized him at h entereel il. lis inmate retained- his former pnsiiion, and seemed lobe insensible ti stran gers. He was found lo be a r.orpe, and a vrrecn damp mould had covered his checks and loreheati, and veiled hi open eye-balls. He had a pen in his hand, and a log-book laying before him, the last sentence in whose unfinished page ran ihus : Nov. 14, 1762. We have now been enclosed in ice 17 days. The fire went eut yesterday, and our mas ter has been trying ever since to kindle it without success. His wife died this morn ing. There is nil relief "' Capt- Warren and his seamen hurried from the spot without utterim- a word. Oil entering the principal cabin the first object that attracted their attention was Ihe dead body of a female reclining on a bed in an al titude of deep interest and attention. Her countenance retained the freshness of life but a contraction of the Iimb3 showed that her form was inanimate. Seated n the floor was a corpse of an apparently young man, holding a steel in erne hand and a flint in the othe, os if in ihe act of striking fire upon some linder which lay besides him. In the fore part of the vessel, several sailors lying elead in their berths, and the body of a boy was cro-iched at the bottom of the gang way stairs. Neither provisjeins nor fuel could be discovered any where; bat Captain Warren was prevented, by the superstitious prejudices of his eamrn, from examining tlie vessel as minutelv as he wished to have done. c i. i ... . , He therefore carrieel away the log-book mentioned, anil, returning to his own ship, immediately steered to the southward deep ly impressed with the awful example which he hail just witnessed of the danger of nivi gati ig the Polar seas in high northern lali f titles. On returning to England he marie vari ous inqnnVi respecting vessels that hael elis appeared in unknown way, and, by com paring the results of those with inlbnnntion which was afforded by the written docu ments in his possession, he ascerlaincel Ihe tianie and history of the imprisoned! ship and of her unfortunate master, and found that she had been frozen thirteen years previous to the time of his discovering her among the ice.
