Consul Owen. Capt Kelley, one of the pardoned C iban invaders, gives the tie direct to most of the statements in Consul Owen's exculpatory epistle. Capt. K.., in a letter pblished at Cleveland, Ohio, says that Mr Owen's story about residing tout miles from Havana, snd not being able to reach the city in time for an interview with the prisoners, &c, is a collection of falsehoods. The Captain affirms that the Consul does not live four miles out of town; that he was not sick at the time referred to in his explanation; that he was well aware of the arrest of Crittenden and his party; that he was sent for bv them, and refused to see them, on the ground that they were outlaw-; that when he subsequently called upon the other prisoners, he kept on the outside of the grating, and told them through the bars that he could not make any efforts to prevent them from going to Spain 1 These and other circumstances of like character. Captain Kelley declares to be capable of verification in Havana. The Hnglish Con sul it seems displayed toward the unfortu nate men the humanity and sympathy which the representatives of their own country retused. The latter knew full well that they had been deceived and humbugged at home that they were vic tims of a delusion and yet he utterly refused them all aid and comfort in their misery. We think, upon the whole, that Consul Owen is the ineaniest specimen of an American that our ilag was ever dis graced by floating over, and we are right "lad that he has been recalled. The North Carolina Reader" is the title of a well-printed octavo volume of some three hundred and fifty pages, from the press of Lippincott, Grainbo & Co., Philadelphia. We have given the work a cursory perusal, and can cordially com mend it, not nieiely to parents and teach ers in North Carolina as a school book, but to the general reader. The plan of the work is novel. While it modestly pur ports to be a school reader, it embraces an amount of historical and other information relative to the State of North Carolina w hich can be found in no other single vol ume; indeed, it would require dilligent re search into many volumes to come at it. It is a work which every intelligent gentle man in North Carolina will procure; and readers in ev ery part ot the country who wish to possess a well-written book, em bracing a perspicuous account of the history, present condition, ami resources of that noble old State, with selections from her best speakers and writers,' should not fail to place it in their libraries. In addition to what pertains to the State, there are chronological and other tables highly use ful for reference Chrisian Statesman. ) r-'W''?l' w 7-- v :iis OF Noaxii Vlina: " -.
