It is applied like ordinary Paint, and in a few months becomes a perfect stone v liich resists both fire and weather. Time seems to have no influence except to make it ad here closer and form a more perfect state. LOOK OUT FOR FRAUD. Thi- article has become so popular that many unprincipled persons who have found beds of rotten-stone, unformed red sand-stone, or any minerals which resemble the genuine article in color, &.c, have published that they have found beds of "Fire-proof Paint," which (without wait ing to test their properties) they oiler to the public for sale, and state that they are superior to everything, whereas none of them have been got tip more than two years, and many of them not vet two months. I hate the statement of more than 20 men of the highest standing in the vicinity of the Mines, who have seen and some of them used these counterfeit studs, which says there has been such a complete failure in all the difierent articles got up and ofiered for sale there as "r ire-proof Paints, except mine, that mine only is considered worth using. Indeed! and what has contributed to this state of extraor dinary prosperity, but your failure to des stroy the policy which has built up such a desirable state of things in the country ? Oh! consistency, thou art a jewel! The Vicksburg Sentinel of a late date contains the proceedings of a meeting of the democrats of Warren county, in that State, at which a number of citizens were appointed delegates to attend a Democratic State Convention, to be held at Jackson, on the Sth of January. The name of Col. Jefferson Davis heads the list. The meeting unanimously adopted the follow ing resolution : Resolved, That the Democratic party of Warren county hereby reaffirm the resolu tion of the National Democratic Conven tion, held in Baltimore on May 20th, 18-48, as the leading; doctrines of their party, upon which they ara prepared to unite with their brethren from all sections of the Union, iu the canvass for President in 1852. Perpetual Motion-. The Courier de la Gironde," France, states that a civil engineer of Bordeaux, named De Vigner non, has discovered the perpetnal motion. His theory is said to be to find in a mass of water at rest, and contained within a certain space, a continual force able to replace all other moving powers. The above journal declares that this has been effected, and that the machine invented by M. de Vignernon works admirably A model of the machine was to be expos ed at Bordeaux for three days, previous to the inventor's departure with it for London. We suppose that this will make the 999th perpetual motion that has beeu discovered, all of which deserve any other name than perpetual. This new one is a static pressure, we see. The Frenchman must have stolen some of Sawyer's thun der, but it will soon be silent enough. Ven you're a married man. It will be gratifying to your reader to learn that the magnificent building, designed for the accontntmlation of the Smithsonian Institution is rapidly' ap proaching its completion. The - external part of the work is entirely finished. ith the exceptien of a single tower and the work in the interior of the building is making good progress. We understand that the whole surface has been thoroughly drained ami so Usui led, and that it is intend ed to form with these grounds, one con tinuous park, extending from the Capitol westward to the Potomac. This erea will include the site of the Washington Monument, and when every thing i completed will lorm a park not to be sur passed either in extent or magnificence by any in this country, anil by few in Europe. We learn that the courses of lectures in which the public have manifested so much interest on former occasions, will be resumed about the middle of the present month, or as soon as a small bridge across the canal shall have been completed, over which it is proposed to carry gaspipes for lighting the Institute. The lectures will be given in the east lecture room this winter, as formerly, which, unfortunately, has proved to be far too small to accom modate the audiences which have attend ed. A much larger lecture room will be in readiness by another season. The lecturers whose services have thus far been secured are. Dr. Kane, subject, the Arctic Kx (edition; Prof. Agassiz, subject. Theology; Prof. Silliman, subject, Geology ; and President Hopkins, of Williams College, and Prof. Rogers, of the Uni versity of Virginia, of whose subjects we are not apprized. Other distinguished scientific and literary gentlemen have been invited, and are expected to lecture dur ing the season. With' such lecturers there will be no abatement of tlte interest which has formerly been manifested in these en tertainments. TRUTH IN A NUT SHELL. rhe Republic having ventured the sei lion, "that the Democratic party proper of the South 4de not acquiesce" in the Compromise, the Savannah Georgian, (a late 'Southern Rights' ami Anti-Compromise organ.) stamps the whole story as utterly'unfounded. in the following em pathic language : Whatever may have been the feelings of Southern Democrats, when the Com promise was first adopted, we say what ! we know, when we affirm !. . that they "do " Those who i tntenu to acquiesce in it felt most indignant at its passage, have yielded to the popular will, and are gen erally disposed to make the 'adjustment' fif the Noith will consent) a final settle ment of the slavery question. The strong est evidence in their acquiescence, is the fact that they are preparing to give their support to the nominee of the Baltimore Convention, though feeling assured that, whetherhe be Douglass, Buchanan, Marcy, Butler, King, or Cass, he will be opposed to disturbing the adjustment which lias been made."' We have never seen a more general union of the Southern Democracy, of all shades of opinion, in favor of acquiescing in the Compromise, of forgetting the past , and rallying upon the nominations of the Baltimore Democratic Convention. In nearly all the States South of us, Conven tions are called to send delegate to the Baltimore Convention. The South is for acquiescence in the past, and a faithful execution of the compact. So, we believe, is the mass of the Northern Democracy. We. therefore, regret to see the subject again agitated in the Congress of the United States. As showing the fine spirit which animate the Democracy of the South, we quote the following from the Griffin (Ga ) Jefferson ian, a paper that strongly opposed the Compromise : To our old Constitutional Union Democratic friends we say, we do not want you to break a single tie or part from a single principle. You say you are Democrats, so are we. You say you are Union men and will abide by the Com promise and adhere to the Georgia plat form so are we, and are determined t doallthnt. You say you are the friends of Cobb and Toombs so are we, if thvs one still continues a Democrat and the other thinks the Democratic the safest party, and will in future act with it What, :hen, hinders us from uniting on the old National Democratic platform again ? If Mr Toombs goes w i n us, so much the better." Richmond En quit er. II kavy Damages. In the case of John and Horace Beardsley vf.
