The people engaged in agriculture in England are slow to change, but neces sity w ill now become the mother of i nven -tion anil advancement. A casual obser vation of the implements of agriculture at the Crystal Palace, is alone sufficient to convince any one, that the skill and in genuity of our countrymen are intently directed to this branch of art. It is due to the fact that large fortunes have been made by those who have been successful. and to the importance given atthe London exhibition to those machines with w hich we reaped their lit Ids in the presence ol assemblages which at first exhibited in credulity, and afterwards astonishment at the success id the display. There ar several competing implements for reaping now under exhibition. They cut down the ripened harvest, gather the straw into bundles, which are delivered rer.il v for tying, antl deposit the gruin in a conveni ent manner. They have been Ions in use in the Western States, as an accom paniment to the steam plow. Where the land has an even surface like that of the prairies, immense fields are cultivated bv means of these valuable instruments. A'. Y. Journal of Commerce. Resides these, there are the roads connecting Gaston with Weldon, ami with tne junction on the Petersburg Road amounting to about SO miles and the portions of ihe Portsmouth & Roan oke, the Peteisburg & Roanoke, and the Charlotte & South Carolina, which are within our borders, fully bringing up the unles ot road in operation within our Stale to the tiguie we have named. The num- uer 01 nines in course 01 construction, or proposed to be made, also exceed the 500 miles given. 220 miles of the Central far advanced to completion, and of which, be tween fifty and sixty will be finished by April next the laving of the iron having; been commenced its proposed extension East to Heatifort, ami West to the Tenn essee line, the surveys lor which were au thorized by tht last Legislature, which will considerably exceed three hundred miles; and the Kaj ettevdle and Western Railroad for which the stock is all taken antl which, with its branches or exten sions, will certainly ro over 50 miles making, in all, much nearer 700 than 500 oiiles. When these facts are taken in consid eration with the large amount of plank roads made and being made, it will be seen that Norih Carolina is far from being mi backward in the race of improvement as is generally supposed. 'J lie single town of Fayetteville has more miles of plank rood connecting with her than al most any other -State in the Union can boast. It iminzton Journal. WOOL GROWING IN VIRGINIA. We learn from the Richmond papers that the farmers of Virginia are turning their attention to Wool growing, and are bent on making themselves practically indepen dent. We have heretofore been mainly de pendent on the northern States, for this article, with imports from Spain and South America, and occasional supplies from Ger many and Saxony. A sample of Saxony Wool, grown in Virginia, was presented at Richmond, worth 85 to 90 cents per pound in any market ; and Merino grown within 20 miles of Richmond, brought 60 cents per pound. The Dispatch says, iu reference to the last mentioned lot: The grower remarked, that at such rates he could not engage in a more profitable busi ness. It seems that he hail entered upon wool growing merely as an expeiiment and had only 170 sheep in his flock. For this season's clip he received about 8380 He informed us that he had 100 lambs for which the butchers had repeatedly offered 81 per head, but that, as they were full blooded Merino, he had sold most of them at $10 each, and expected no difficulty in selling the remainder at the same prtcf . At this rate his profits for a single year will be from S750 to 81,350 upon 170 sheep.
