V THE GREEN; SUN OF 1S31. 'J.'-, , .
In the , niemory of many yet living '
there occuned in 1 83 1 1 a 'phenomenon "'
whiclr will never be foru'tteri' by theJn,
and which will be bunded down 'tradi
tion t their remotet cnertition.' Par
allel circumstnnces ave ihe yhefioinetiott
an unusual importance, and alf the lean-
ju of supM-istition added lo its strength.
In Ihe year IS:, in the month of Au--ust,
lunn the ilng tlays, appeared what
was called the green xim. For many days
previous, a heavy ant! mysterious silence
had chained the 'elements, no clouds had
obscured the sky, ami no forked !ihttiin
had 'cleaved tlie firmament. Thedeep
muttei ins of the thunder were 'unheard,
yet a pall bun- over the face of nature.
A sdrane and solemn calm rested upon
every tiling, 'and men looked vvonderin" al
each other to divine (he result.
Those who have read Iat robe's voyage
down Ihe Ohio, in 181 1, at the time when
the "real earthquake of that year devastat
ed the west, it they saw this phenomenon,
can enter iuto his feelings. Then the Sun
seemed to stand fetill in its course, para
lyzed and benumbed, shorn of its rays,
and powerless for good or'evil while
nature stood ahaiit, waiting the hidden
agency which was to assert a new. power.
I)ays passed on upon the Ohio, and while
a general gloom overshrouded the country, V
liie issuu was at last unexpectedly'preci
pilaled, and the whole valley f the Vy- j:

In 1831, nature here assuineheskiK
mysterious ".aib. and those who remember-
vti tlie disasters of New Madrid and. the
valley of the Mississippi, looked forward '
tt a repetition ot the same. At Iedh
the crisis seemed to have come. The sun,
which rose clear and cloudless in the morn
ing ami reached, the meridian in full glory,
after passing it, began to assume a pale
and si, kly hue, and by four o'clock was
totally deprived of all illuminating power.
It then had the appearance of a greenish
globe, thitklyset across ils diameter with
black spots of various size's; .which con- .
tiuucil visible to the naked eye, until tun
set. Iy after tlay this was repeated,
until the heart became sick with dreatl
anticipation. Nor were fears misplaced
or credulity too active It was then, by
a strange coincidence of horrors, .that the
murderous blow s or Nat. Turner
were
struck, and the
iietirtits of Soutbamntoii
believed for a while
that thev were fret?

r.hen, in this State, and Virsinia.
with the sky looming vengeance upon us,
ami encouraging the blacks to freedom,
according to the reading- of the oracle,
were enacted those horrible tragedies, so
eagerly sought to be renewed by the aboli
tionists of this dy. No man went to hii
betl without placing his gun, within reach,
and no family separated for the night wilh
out tiismal lot ebodings. The enemy was
of their own household. But the defeat
of the insurgents in Virginia, and summary
punishment upon tire rebellious in North
Camlina, at length restored quiet, and
though those disturbances wilt never be
forgoUc", they will be remembered as
things. that cannot be repealed.
W hite man reasumed his accustomed
calm, nature proceeded to da the saute,
and al ter a daily obscurity of same weeks,
the sun shone out with his usual brilliancy
and fervor. A solution to this phenomenon
has never been oliered. It seems never to
have attracted tire attention of philosophers.
It may have been owing to dense exhala
tions from previous copious rains, which
hung suspended in the air, ithout assum
ing the cloud form. Why the sun, how
ever, should have assumed the green hue,
seems beyond explanation. It certainly
did, however, and left the face of the King
of tlay exposed to the irreverent curiosity
of the profane, showing more patches than
he is generally willing to acknowledge. v
