Ilezekiah JJroadbrim was a fair Quaker, who sold molasses, codfish, china, earthenware and clothes and all sorts of liquors. We like the Quakers, in deed as well as in name. And Ilezekiah was a Hickory Quaker He was somewhat of an old bachelor, and had a sister that was somewhat of an old maid. JJut she was the best creature alive, straight as a candle blooming- as a rose, and smiling as charitv. Her name w'as Dorcas. Hezekiah and Dorcas walked one Sunday afternoon, in the Idooming month of May, to breathe, the fresh air, and vie; tlte meadows. The walking was smooth and delightful, with no manner of obstructions, except here and there a ditch full of water,; span wed iiy-, a ...few hedges, and too wide j for .' a f tuao . of ordinary. capacity to1 cross at a guttle .boandc-lful; Hez li, , . , . . ' "Thee'd better not try that, Ilezekiah," said the kind and considerate sistec 'Never thee mind, Dorcas,' replied Ilezekiah; "there's no danger; I've jumped a bigger ditch when I wasn't half my present size." "All that's very likely, but recollect thee's grown exceedingly pussy since thee was a young man." . ''Pussy! well, if I have that's no reason why I shouldn't be as agile as before; I tell thee, Dorcas, I can jump this ditch without so much as touching a finger." '.'Aye, but thee'l touch thy feet to the bottom." "Thee's but a woman, Dorcas, and thy fears magnify this ditch even to a river. Now stand thee aside that I may have sweep according to my abilities." Nay, brother Ilezekiah, thee'd better not. The ditch is wide and the bottom muddy, and thee'l assuredly spoil thy Sunday clothes if no worse." "Oh, fudge for yonr fears, girl; they shall not stay me a jot. Nay, do not hold me, I am resolved to jump this ditch if it were merely to convince thee of my agility." I Accordingly Ilezekiah went back a few yards in order that he might have a fair run and that the impulse thereof inight carry him over. Having retraced far enough he came forward with a momentum proportioned to his weight and velocity and found himself in the ditch. The water splashed around on all sides and splotted the Sunday clothes of Dorcas, who could not, with till her Quaker sobriety and kind feeling, help bursting into a loud laugh! There was Hezekiah showing his agility and floundering in the mud like a whale! The wtitci was not so deep ns to be dangerous, and (the scene too irresistibly comic for even a saint . to abstain from hi no-hii,,,- thomrh on the Lord's day. But, if thee's satisfied with thy exploit and ready to come forth; I will lend thee, a hand to help thee out." Thus saving, Dorcas drew near the ditch, but Hezekiah, having got himself in by his unaided power, declared he would get himself t j t,e f..imc way t t1(J mu, was deep in- 11 , iv.f i i, a"(1 adhesive, and as he got one loot out he got the other 111; and thus he continued to lahor and plunge till he was satisfied that his mvn ability was better calculated to help him in than to help him out of the ditch! He grew wroth, and so far forgot the plain language that he exclaimed: 'By !" "Don't thee swear, brother Hezekiah," in terrupted Dorcas. "Swear!" roared Hezekiah, "thee'd swear if thee was in here !" Verily thee should not make, me so heavy as the former animal, norso stupid as the latter." As to thy weight, returned Dorcas, "thee must be pretty well satisfied by this time; and as for thy stupidity, it were indeed unsisfeiiy to like thee to the long cared animal. But if thee is satisfied on these points, and will forth- with reach me thine hand, I'll do as much as in me lieth to bring thee sale to land. Hezekiah was prettv well convinced by this time, that his ow n ability would never fetch him out; wherefore, humbly reaching his hand to Dorcas, he said, "verily, sister I will accept thine aid, inasmuch as my own ability hath deceived me." Dorcas kindly lent her assistance, and pulling vigorously, Ilezekiah at length came to land. Shaking off the mad and water like a spaniel, he returned home, but charged his sister by the way never to mention how he came by the cttastrophc. Dorcas promised of course, and as she was a girl of truth and kind feelings, she was as good as her word. But once or twice when they were in company with several other Quakers, "discoursing soberly about matters and things, Dorcas, looking archly at another girl, merely said, "Did I ever tell the Bachael, how brother Hezekiah one Sunday " Ilezekiah turned an embarrassing and implor ing look toward her, and she said: "Nay, nay, Ilezekiah, I'm not going to tell but merely to ask if I ever had told how thee showed thy agility one Sunday, and jumped in the middle of a ditch?" . Baienoi and the Jerome Company Result of the Xew Haven Alecting. The meeting of the creditors of the Jerome Company and of P. T. Barnaul, at New naven, on Monday night last, resulted in a recommendation to the Jerome Company to go into liquidation. They have done so. Mr Barnum has also gone into an assignment. With all thy getting, get wisdom. A Ilard-Shrll Sermon. .We find the following short bnt decided ''Hard Shell Sernnii'1 going the rounds of the papers without a sign of credit, although the scene, as they have it in theatrical parlance, is laid in the interior of Kentucky. It is aver red that the thing is genuine that the sermon or harangue was really delivered. De this as it may, it almost equals, in closeness of argu ment and stickiness to text, the "spontaneous clTorts of the clerical hero who played so dustily upon H 'JIurp t.f a Thousand Strings.' I3ut read the sermon and judge for yourselves: My Hreethring: The Scriptures tell ns, "we are buried with Christ by baptism." "llitried" my friends, not PsprimkUcF by baptism. v. One likes always o see a lawver, whose forte is to bantcrand bully witnesses, brought up with a round turn by some victim of his ill-natured bearing. We heard an instance the other day which is w orth relating. A case was beiny; tried ou Long Island, about the soundness of a horse, in which a clergyman, not conversant in such mutters, was a witness. lie was a little confused in giving his evidence, and a blustering fellow of a lawyer, who examined him at last exclaimed: "Prav. sir. do vou know the difference be tween a horse and a cow?'' "I acknowledge my ignorance," replied the clergyman, "I hardly know the difference be tween a horse and a cow, or a bully and a bull, only that a'bull litis horns, and a "bully" (bow ing with mock respect to the pettifogger) luckily for imr, has none "You can retire, sir," said the lawyer, "I've no further questions to ask you." Moistche r,v Dkkt Plowing. Morrison says in the Farm Journal, that he broke up a stiff sod for corn w ith a heavy plow, drawn by four oxen. A sub-soil plow followed, running down six or seven inches deeper.' The whole was so thoroughly performed, that a stick could be thrust down into the loose earth, in almost any part of the field, to the depth of fifteen inches. The summer was exceedingly dr', pastures were burnt anil bare and till the crops suffered severely. Bnt the corn on the sub-soil hind continued green and luxuriant throughout the season. 'Dr. Kalopium, do you think my darter will git well?' . "AVell, if she don't git no wnss, and does git sun; better, she may possibly git over it. You see she's a dieted with a concatenation of the diagnosis of the metacarpial liummux, which extends from the noboscis to the inferior lobe of the anterior revolution of the occiput. 'Lor' a mercy, sich la ruin'! who'd a thunk it?' Sale ok pews in a fashionable cir-kch. The pews of one of the fashionable "up-town"' churches of New York were sold on Monday last. The Post says: "At first the bidding was quite animated, ! but it soon fell off, and premiums ran down to alow figure. there were twelve pews 111 tlte cfmrch valued at $1,000 each and upwards none, however, above $1,200. These twelve pews wold at an aggregate premium of $l,74o; the highest premium .being $3o0, and the low est $20. The w hole number of pews sold was sixty-three, and they brought, in the aggregate something over $;3''J,000y of which more than $4,500 was in premiums. The Nation's Exthavagance. Yor the year ending August 31st, lS5f, we Americans imported from Europe, for our own heads and those of our wives and daughters, $l,iSe2,.'jG0 worth of bonnets, of silk, straw, and leghorn, and of hats and caps. Yet how few of the head pieces one sees give evidence of having been sent for 3,0Q miles away. All are seem-' bigly homemade. In that same year, Young 1 'id Old America treated themselves to $3,732, ;..") worth of watches, chronometers, and clocks of European make. Their . appetite, too, for foreign jewelry, was baited with $974,120 worth of the articleupon w hich, without sighing, they paid a duty of thirty per cent. Of leather to cover their hands at:d feet, they sent across the ocean and bought to the tune of $3,067, 60 enough to hide-bind the nation, and sicken it in various ways. When Edward Everett was entertained at a public dinner before leaving Boston, Judge Story gave as a sentiment "Genius is sure to be rewarded where Erer-ett goes." Ererctt re sponded "Law. equity and jurisprudence, no efforts can raise them above one Story. He that by the plow would thrive, Mast either hold the plow or drive. 1 1 . " "
