A few mouths since, a son of Erin, about eight o'clock one evening, called at a country inn in the western part of Pennsylvania, and demanded lodgings for the night. It was evident from his appearance and actions that lie and liqupr had been quite jolly companions throughout tiie day. The Landlord was a lazy good natured soul, and had imbibed rather freely that day himself. "If I give you a light and tell you where the room is you can find the place?" said the laud lord. "Och and it's nieself that can do that most illegantly. Just show me the way, an' I'll find it as aisy as the Holy Virgin showers down blessings upon the sinful," rejoined the Irish man. The direcliors were given him and also a candle, lie was - directed to go to a room on the second lloor in the house. Ry the time he had reached the top of the stairs, his light had become extinguished and had forgotten in what direction he was to go. Seeing rays of light issuing from a room, the door of which stood slightly ajar, he reconnoitered the inside of the room, and found it to contain a bed in which lay a man, and a stand with a small lighted lamp upon it. Feeling disinclined to make any further search for the room to which he had been directed, he divested himself of his cloth ing and quietly crept into bed. He had been in but a few moments, when a young lady and grit i fema it r-inereit -ttitr ruunr.- 'i'litr Itialiitmu eyed them closely. The' seated themselves on the chairs, in close proximity to each other, and after chatting merrily for a short time the young man threw his arm around her waist in a very cousinly manner, and imprinted a kiss upon her tempting lips. There was a witchery in it which demanded a repetition. The scene amused the Irishman vastly, and being free from selfishness, he concluded that his sleeping companion should be a participant with him in the enjoyment of the scene, nudged him, but his companion stirred not. He put his hand upon him and found that he was tightly locked in the embrace of death. Synonj'nious with this discovery, he bounded out of the bed, exclaiming: "Murther! murther! Ilowly Saints of Hivcii protect me!" He had scarcely touched the floor with his feet before the young lady and gentleman were making rapid strides towards the stairway, terror being depicted on their countenances. They had just reached the top of the stairs when the Irishman came lashing along, as though the fiends of Erebus were closing at his heels, intent on making him their prey, and the whole three went tumbling down the stairs, and it is hard to determine which of the three reached the foot of the stairs first. The landlord stood aghast as the Irishman rushed into the bar-room, with nothing between him ami nudity but a garment vulgarly styled a shirt, the hair on his head standing upon end his eyeballs ready to leap from their sockets, and he gasped for breath. It was a sight that would have made a man laugh who had worn a vinegar face from the day of his birth. Nothing could induce him to seek a bed that night again. AVhen the young lady and gentleman found that it was not the corpse that had so unceremoniously bounded from the bed, they returned to the" room, (they heing the watchers for the night.) and doubtless commenced thtir courting at the point where it had so suddenly Urokcn off. It is well known that the Highlanders are great sticklers for he reditary honors, and trace back with the greatest veneration the origin of families into the remotest ages. An amusing instance of this tenacity to hold to the dignity and antiquity of their kindred ma be found in the case we subjoin: A dispute arose between Campbell and McLean upon the never ending subject. Mc Lean, would not allow that the Campbells had any right to rank with the McLeans in antiquity, who, he insisted, were in existence as a clan from the beginning of the world. Campbell, had a little more biblical lore than his antagonist, and asked him if the clan McLean was before the flood? "Flood! what flood?'" said McLean. "The flood that you know drowned all tin world but Noah, and his family, and his flocks," replied Campbell. "Pooh !you and your flood," said McLean; "uty clan was afore the flood." "I have not read in my Bible," said Campbell, "of the name of M'Lean going into Noah's ark." "Noah's ark!" retorted M'Lean, in contempt, "who ever heard of a M'Lean that had not a boat of his own?" Ernm the San Franrixro Ooldtn Era. A Short Patent Scrioon. IIV Dow, JU. I will draw a melancholy discourse this morning from the following text: "Laugh and grow fat." My Hearers: I have lately thrown ray 'ogitatiiig apparatus considerably out of gear in attempting to make out whether laughter produces tat, or a good layer of the adipose promotes laughter. The conclusion 1 have arrived at is, that laughter is, generally speak ing, the spontaneous production of an oleagin ous soil, and has little or nothing to do towards aildlng aught to its richness. It is the naturally contented mind, my friends, that tends to cor poreal fatness; and when fatness is once ob tained, laughter takes root therein, and branches out nmL blossoms, like sunflowers on the wo-begone, (jod-forsnken hypochondriacs the whole of whose self-manufactured misery seems to have crawled into his countenance the verv ast of whose mildewing eye is enough to rub all the polish from a pair of patent-leather boots let him possibly be electrified into a cachinating par oxysui,-long and loud, nud no more fat will gather. upon his ribs than honey dew upon the sapless role-lea vesof an old maid's bonnet. Why? lie-cause the maggots of mel ancholy that continually prey upon his mind are not to be frightened from their favorite repast by the most startling guffaw that ever shook the quiet realms of Cheerfulness. Take too, one of your pale, wafer-lipped, weasel visaged skin-flints, who indulges in moonshiny smiles at the remotest prospect of a bargain, and who is more redundant of smirks and bows than a disowned California dog is of (leas move him into fits of audible niirthfiiliiess as often as 3-011 ma', still he will be as slim as a shitcpokc fed upon hair-snakes, if he were to live long enough to be the grand-dad of the little IJeelzebubs that ma" happen to be born somewhere about the middle of the next cen tury. Now, my brethren, behold yonder happy mortal, with a soul wrapped up in a thick blanket 0ff.1t with a knob plump and shining as a pumpkin in October whose merry little optics twinkle like twin stars at the summit of Mount Diabolo whose "fair round belly, with good capon lined," is an object of en vy to all walking shadows" that stalk the earth. All his ideas swim, like preserved sardines, in the richest and sweetest of oil; every exprcshed thought slides out sleek and greasy, and the whole tenor and tone of his voice are like the inner bark of slippery elm. His. mind dwells in such comfortable winter quarters that he never feels otherwise than happy and cheerful. He feels so jjood that laughter not of vonr coarse, horse-fashioned kind, but the fine, short- furred sort peeps out, ever and atibn, from its fat fold, and causes every "varmint"' Io take to its hole, like rats and goblins damned, at the What, my friends, do you suppose brought this laughter-breeding human to the verge of obesity? It was not laughing at either stage or street farces; nor at the freaks and follies of a ridiculous world; nor nt every new-fangled and odd fashion, that makes organ grinders,' monkeys almost grin themselves into convul sions; nor hyena-like, at the most ridiculous of legislative proceedings nor was it even at such comical preaching as mine. No: it was the genial spirit of contentment that diffused a cheering warmth throughout his whole system fertilized his heart, and furnished a good soil from which future spontaneous laughter was to spring, like the dandelion and mushroon, sifter a gentle rain and nurturing sun. He never drove pigeon-eyed peace from her domicil by sweating, lighting and swearing for polities, nor wrangled flesh from his bones in behalf of orthodox", universalis!)!, atheism, nor any of the vulgar isms of the day nor kept himself as lean as Pharaoh's lousiest calf by chasing a hammered sixpence from San Diego to the I5ay of Kamscatka. liy keeping in good fellowship with himself and his stomach by maintaining good humor meddling with no one's business but his own exercising patience at the fitful blowing of adverse winds, and bound to be happy whether or no he, at last, accumulated the adipose, if not a superabundance of the "filthy;" and now mirth inspiring laughter will jerk itself out, in defiance of morbid melan choly, sepulchral ministers, ominous doctors aye, even the d 1 himself ! My brethren: I like to see smiling counte nancesfaces wearing smiles that warm while they glow, instead of shedding a cold, phos phorescent glare, like rotle-n wood or stinking mackerel at midnight smile that reflect none of the boi rowed light of affectation, for design or intrigue. I also love to hear a respectable, mild-drawn, heart-born laugh, when summoned by an appropriate occasion; but as for an in veterate, clownish, haw-hawing, horse cachina ting habit, I despise it am ready to howl at it like a dog at a fish-horn blown in his car. Your spasmodic fits of loud laughter, my friends, in stead of gathering an extra coat of fat upon your bones, is far more likely to consume what little tallow may have been permitted to con glomerate in the region if vonr ribs. Exces sive laughter, my heedless brethren, is more over not unattended with danger: you might possibly snap one of the "thousand strings" with which the harp of the human system is strung and then where would any more laugh come from? History informs us, if memory doesn't lr: k me, that Timoleoti the younger, killed himself with laughter at seeing an ass eat figs. So, you see, he snapped, his fiddle-string, and laid down and died I';ke another jackass! Take warning, my incrVhious brethren, and keep a taut rein upon your" risible propensities; for, in this comical age, far more dangerous sights beset the inexperienced langhing philoso pher than a donkey munching over a ba.-ket of figs. Some folks, i of ticklish, touch-wood dis positions, might jeopardise their Jives to see you pitch into the eleven o'clock free-lunch, or mark with what ludicrous avidity our public servants pick up and devour' the people's money like so many geese at n corn-crib! Keep up good cheer, my friends, let come what may come; live temperately, that good digestion may wait on appetite; endeavor, by your own jolly good nature, to make all happy around you, and you will stand a good cluuico to grow fat and then laugh! laugh your way dbwu the gentle declivity to the tomb. "Die-a-laughing," for aught I cure. So mote it be! .V' r
