AYETTE V1LL E, N. C.
THE NOR T
srz r-BP
SetcnS y-Six.
Wliat heroes from tlic woodland sprung;,
When, through the fresh awakened land,
The thrilling cry of Freedom rung,
And to the work of warfare strung
The yeoman's iron liand !
3 Jills flung the cry to hills around,
And ocean mart replied to mart,
And streams, whose springs were yet unfound,
Pealed far away the startling sound,
Into the forest's heart.
Then marched the hrave from rocky steep,
From mountain river, swift and cold,
The border of the stormy deep,
The vales where gathered waters sleep,
Sent up the strong and bold
As if t lie very earth again
Grew quick with God's creating breath,
And from the sods of grove and glen,
Iiose ranks of iron-hearted men,
To battle and to death. ,
The wife, whose babe first smiled that day,
The fair, fond bride of yesterevc,
Ami aged sire and matron gray
Saw the loved warrior haste away,
And deemed it sin to grieve.
Already had the strife begun;
Already blood on Concord's plain
Along the springing grass had run,
And blood had flowed at Lexington,
Like brooks of April rain.
That death-stain on the vernal sward,
Hallowed to Freedom all the shore;
In fragments fell the yoke abhorred
The footsteps of a foreign lord
Profaned the soil no more.
The .IH-rjoiHfis of the Day.
Miss Fortune's no fortune at all,
ZUiss Rich cannot muster a guinea.
Miss Little's a little too tall,
Miss Vis: is completely a ninny.
Miss Black is as white as the snow,
Miss Green is as red as a cherry,
Miss lirown's rather greenish or so,
Whilst Miss White is as brown as a berry,
Miss Inchbald's a flue head of hair,
Miss Hare has got none on her noddle;
Miss Young is old, wrinkled, and spare.
Miss Lightbody scarcely can waddle;
Miss Ileavysidc bounds like' a roe.
Miss Wild is grave, dull and uncherry:
Miss Still is accounted the go,
And Miss Grave is excessively merry.
Miss Sharp has got blunt, as they say,
Miss Park is prodigiously bright;
Miss Might has been turned into day,
And Miss Day is to marry a knight.
Then here is a health to them all,
Good luck to them sleeping and waking,
Iftis wrong a fair maid to Miss-call,
Yet there's surely no sin in Miss-taking.

Thou too sail on, O Ship of State,
Sail on, () Union, strong; and great!
Humanity, with all its fears,
With nil the hopes of future years,
Is hanging- breathlessly on thy fate!
We know what Master laid thy keel.
What workman wrought thy ribs of steel,
Who made each mast and sail and rope,
What anvils rang, what hammers beat,
In what a forge and what a heat
Were shaped the anchors of thy Hope!
Fear not each sudden sound and shoek,
'Tis of the wave and not the rock,
'Tis but the flapping of the sail,
And not a rent made by the gale!
In spite of rock and tempest roar,
In spite of false lights on the shore,
Sail on nor fear to breast the sen!
Our hearts, our, hopes are all with thee:
Our hearts, our hopes, our prayers, our tears,
Our faith triumphant o'er our Years,
Are all with thee are all with thee!
