The first thins; that puzzled him on hi.s arri val was Ids wife's skirts—his wife was in the .la'dt of ealline: the new hoop skirts ‘TIoop- le-dooden-dol’’ A ladv sat in lier rocking chair, ! (This tale we yet may rue,) 1 Her skirts swelled out in wide array j From her “lioop-de-dooden-do!’’ Uer lord had sonc a great way off, (And stopped too long there too,) So the lady inereased her skirts at home With her hoop-de-tiooden-do! Long months rolled on—a year flew by, (To stop time never site,) Still the lady's skirls in fashion stuck out. From her hoop-de-doodeu-do! Toward winter time, her lord came home, (Per'oap.s his nose looked blue,) He “smelt a raice"—he stared at the skirts And their hoop-de-doodeti-do! At length he spake unto his wife, (Now good wives all sjjeak true,) “My dear what makes your skirts swell out?’ “Why, my hoop-de-doodeii-do!” The good man saw ’twas fashion s whim, (E’en a fashion wives pursue,) 'But he vows his wife's skirt scared him so With her hoop-Ue-dooden-do! e'ii Im^i'uess >n his own hook. auU hopes by strict at teution and niitiring industry, to merit a contmuam. ‘’Ste’^ha'^now on hand and will constantly keep a assortment of Saddles. My love is like the scented wreath That twines a marble statue round; Long has it wa.sted there its breath. And vet no kind response has found. And still prolong.^ its painful strife. To warm the statue into life. ify lore is like an altar fire, Springing toward its deity; How ardently its flames aspire, fidw faithful its idolatry! If it one answering sigh can gain. Oh! then it has not burned in rain. My love is like a sunbeam bright. That shines upon a wintry cloud; Ohl what a joy to find its light Reflected from that icy shrond. One ray returned, one kindred smile. Were purchased cheap with all its toil. Thou, art tht marble! Wilt thou give ^ No token of a soul within? Thai, art the goddess! S7-tf PROSPECTUS OF THE SOUTHERN UlTERARY MESSENGER For the Year 1856. July to December. TWENTY-THIRD VOUTJIB. In issuing the Prospectus of the Twenty-Third Vol ume ofthe SOUTHERN LITER.VRY MESSENGER, commencing with the July No., the Proprietors rely solely on the encouraging letters and promises of the friends of the .Messenger to aid them in e.\'tcnding its circulation, and they beg to assure the public that na exertions will be remitted on their part to maintain the high cliaracter of the work, and to challenge the patronage of all who value sterling literary merit. For Twenty-One Years, the .Messenger has endeavored to reflect faithfully the Southern mind, while disdaining all narrow and sectional views, and has been alone among the monthly periodicals of America, in defence of the PEOULI'aR INSTITUTIONS OF THE SOUTHERN STATES. To this office it will be devoted, and will be prompt to repel assaults upon the South, whether they come under the specious garliof fiction, or in the direct form of anti-slavery pamphlets. At this critical juncture, while our enemies are employing literature as their most potent weapons of attack, the Southern people will surely not withhold their encouragement from a work whose aim it shall be to strike blows in their de fence. The Messenger will, as heretofore, present its renders with Reviews, llislorical and Biographical Sketches. Novels. Tales, Travels, Essays, Poems, Critiques, and Papers on the Army, Navy and other National Subjects. With a view to ensnre ^ larger circulation of the MESSENGER, the Proprietors though they intend greatiy increasing the size ofthe work, have reduced the price of Snpscription, which is now only Three Dollars per- aaiinm, In Advance, OR FOUR DOLLARS IF NOTPAID BEFORE THE FIRST OF JULY IN ANY YE.AR. CLUBS—Remiltiag us Fifteen Dollars in one letter, will be entitled to Six Copies. The Editorial and Critical department of the Mes senger will continue under the charge of JOHN R. THOMPSON, Eaq-, And will embrace copious notes on current literature and reviews of all new American or Foreign works of general intere.st and value. The Editor’s opinions will be always fearlessly and honestly avowed.
