September 26, 1857. G9-tf. The Pre.sbytcrian Church in North Ciiroliiin has long labored under a serious disadvantage from the want of a journal to advocate her claims and represent her interests. It is esti mated that only 1000 Preshyterian Weeklies are taken in the bounds of oiir three Presbyte ries. We liave 13,000 Coiiimnnicatirs, and it is safe to infer that there are 30,000 I’resby- teriaiis in principle in the State. Oar Synod stands fifth in the Union in point of iiiiiiibers, and her meiiiticrship is greater than tiiat of any Synod South or West of Peini.sylvania. Our sister States on the North and South, neither of which has a membership so large as ours, piihli.sh the Central, and the Soiitlierii Presin-terian, for the benclit of their people. The time has come when the Presliyteriaii Church in N'orth Carolina slionid likewise do her duty to her ehildren. It is a conceded and raportnnl fact, that hundreds of our memiiers will take a State iiapcr who will lake no other. The Paper is needed lo be the organ of onr .Synod and Presiiyterics— to elevate and en lighten the piety of our memnersliip by diffusing evangelical knowledge—to [iroraote the caii.se of Education—to deveiope the talents of onr Ministry, and to strengthen the attachment ot onr people to the soil and sanctuaries of their own State. If onr Ciinrch in other States, and other Churches in tliis State, can siii'iily their mein- licr.s with a religious journal, why may not we? Are N'orth Carolina I’resbytcrians inferior in talent, energy and patriotism lo their neighbors on the xorth or South, or to Christians of otlier deiioininations at hoinc? With the same or lietter opportniiities of accomplishing this work, .sliall we leave it undone? In the language of one of onr most nlile and useful ■Vtiiiisters, an adopted son of onr State, “It ought to have been uiidertakeii 20 year.s ago, but it is not too late to begin to do right.” Ill the last two or three months, a fund of about .5.5000 lias been subscribed as a perma nent capital.
