Convention in Rhode Island passed the follow
ing resolution :
Resolved, Whether the fugitive slave taw be con
stitutional or unconstitutional, whether the United
States Constitution be pro-slaycry or anti-slavery,
that the presence of any person, or any sex or color
in the State of Rhode Island, shall bean irrevocable
title to freedom, and that on no consideration shall
the land of Roger Williams ever again be desecrated
by the polluting foot of the slave hunter. Roger
Williams was a slave owner.

Jacobi and Evans, who wre convicted of the murder
of their wives, expiated their crimes ott the gallows at
the Couuty Jail, this afternoor. The drop tell at 2
o'clock- The execution was a strictly pr.vate one,
there being no military present. As lew persons w ere
admitted within the jail yard as possible, and the
crowd which gathered outside was not la ge in num
bers. Jacobi declined making any speech, but Evans
spoke for an hour and a half, declaring his inno
cence of the crime of which he w as convicted. The dy
ing struggles of bothj the men were very severe
