T. v. '.. - : 7 f,. A Good Retort;.' The Richmond 2Yew says: A lady of our acquaintanceho has sufficiently good jndgment and sense not lo make herself an object of particular attention by wearing im moderately large hoops, was passing up one of our principal thoroughfares a few days ince, when she was met by a young man full or bad whiskey, who way laboring very strenuously to preserve his epuanimity; and- prevent the dis covery of his condition. In, endeavoring to avoid a collision with the lady in question, he lost his balance and stepped on the skirt of her dress, when he turned towards her and remark ed, by way of apology, "Hoops take up too much room, The lady, looked at him, and very quietly retorted, " Not so much as whiskey sir," and passed on. Ekd of the Trial at Kixston. The jury in the case of Gates, one of the kidnappers at Kins ton returned a verdict of guilty of misdemeanor and the prisoner was sentenced to pay a fine of $100 and be imprisoned 12 months. JFeirbern Jaily Progress. The merchants and business men of San Francis co, are taking measures for the erection of a monu ment to Senator Broderick October, 185. rplIE UNDERSIGNED herewith begs leave to acquaint Merchants Farmers, Planters Turp. Such approval as this and the question was put at all his lectures gave Brown confidence that his party would sustain him in whatever ho might do sigainst the men of the Soul'), and thin emboldened, A letter from Chambcrsburg, Pa., stating the participation of Fred Douglas In the plot at Harper's Ferry. says : Home el-ht or ten weeks ago Fred Douglas, without anyWttatioit, appeared in this place osten sibly to deliver an Abolition lecture. Not only had there been no invitation known to the public, but there had been no previous announcement, and the first intelligence of his intended presence was a teleo-raphir; dispatch from him to a colored man of thisplace, received late in the afternoon, that he would be here that (Saturday) evening and deliver u lecture. He came, accompanied by another color ed man who did not seem to have any special business; lectured in the evening, remained over Sabbath ' and said to some of his colored friends that he w ould be back here sometime in October. Since assumed names have been revealed at Harper's Ferry; it is now remembered that about the same time a man was here, calling himself Smith, (corresponding in some things to the descrip tion given of Brown,) who was receiving numerous boxes from the East, through two of the forwarding houses at this place, and quite a number of letters through the post -office, lie also bought at the cd 'c-tool factory picks Band axes, and these, with the goods received by railroad, were forwarded .southward by a wagon. He remained here nearly a week, going out but little to any other places than the warehouses, post-office and factory. During the Sabbath that Fred. Douglas remained here, he oo, remained closely at his lodgings, and it is re membered that he was visited by, and remained in conference during part of that day with, a couple of strangers, who were paid to have their lodgings at a boarding-house where, there is some reason to believe, this man Smith has at times either been staving himself or keeping some member ol his family. OSS.WVATTOIIIE BROWX. A bolder or worse man than that same Ossawat tomie Hrown tho world never knew. His single virtue, ''linked with a thousand crimes," was bull dog courage. Fanatic- to the highest degree a pupil, in politics, of the G hidings school he has been tiiught to believe that the killing of a slave holder TJis r.ri act which God would anprovc.
