The average duty on imported merchandise nnder the McKinley bill is gtn as about 50 per cent. One of the hitherto ''Btronjreit arguments" of the advocates of high tariff, such at the McKinley bill ia, has been protection to American "infant industries." More than one hundred years have elapsed since the enactment of the first tariff law, which imposed an average doty on imported merch andise of from 7 to 8 per cent. According to the McKirley argument it follows, therefore, that th older and stronger the indus try is, the higher the duty; the better able it ia to stand alone, the more it asks and the more it gets. The Brooklyn Eagle points it out that the Republican party has exactly reversed the theory of protection to young and unestab liohed industries, that what they have don and want to continue to do, is eemingly to protect and shield the old established, wealthy institutions. The fraud has be come so impudent ihst its benefic iaries will no longer listen to talk about protection as a temporary expedient. They hare demand d that it be mnde permau nent. It i tbU ariogaut, unreasoning demand that the people have so recently rebuked. It if this a' sumption that the people are call ing for an Extra Session of Citn great to sit down npon. Tiiey want the work of rebuke and re formation to begin at as early date as pssible. The people who have voted a lack of confidence in the party of high protection ask thi; the busi ness interests of the country are anxious for it. Even so wiee and conservative a pnblication as the Dry Goods Economist dscuse irg the proposed extra session, ays: "In point of fact, from three to ix months will be inevitably con sumed in formulating aud discuss ing a new bill, if the details of the werk are to be done by Congress, and even after the legislation has takea final shape, a further period of several months would be allow ed t elapie before it would be put in force. In view of this fact, which any one familiar with the process ef Federal legislation will confirm, there should obviously be no unnecessary delays in getting at the work." There should be no delay in giving the people the relief they voted for. The tumble of the hih roller Republicans from their perches on the roof, when the result of the late election became known, wu a spectacle for men and gods. Down they came like potato bugs fiom a feast on paris green-pell- mell, and each with a "dull, sick ening thud." It w&s a wholesale tumble from the sublime of con fidence in vietory, to the ridiculous eonclusion of ntter and overwhelm ing discomfiture and defeat. Chauncey M. Dpew, alone of all the gang of blew-hardi, maintain ed his altitudinoi.s position, and ottered words of cheer to the die- may ed and shattered legions of the g. o. p. 4Lnd above the groans of the wounded and the howls of the despairing, his voice rang out clear and strong for 'reconstm( tion, and Harmon in 1896." Such faith baa not been seen, "not ven Israel;" nor such devotion since "the boy stood on , the barns ing deek, whence all but him had fled." Newbern Journal: The trial of Mr. Thos. Clark, charged with the murder of Mr. RD. McCotter, which has been in progress several days at Bayboro is ended. The case was gryen to the jury Friday afternoon. They returned a ver dict of not guilty. Mr. Clark was released at once and was in the city visiting relatives. A letter has been received at the Newbern Potffice addressed to Groer Cleveland, President elect, New bern, N. C. When an Assorted Pie6s telegram announced a tew days ago, that Cleveland was likely to spend a short vacation at New ton, N. Cf a number of paper got it Newbern. Charlotte Observer: Dr. Wil der was called upon yesterday to amputate several fingers for a negro man who had been bitten by a "blue-gum nigger" about a week ago. The hand was in a terrible condition, and was swollen to about double its natural size. According to the negroes' theory a "blue-gummed nigger bite" is deadly poison. THE FIGHT!!
