C, JAN. 5 IS' 3 TRAGEDT AND FARCE IN PARI As all the world knows, the .French Republic is at presen trembling under the disgrace and danger of a tremendous scandal Ex-Deputj Andrieux, former Pre feet of Paris, has been playing the role once aisumed in our own Congress by Oakes Amei, when he appalled the country with hie Credit Mobilier revelation". An drieuz kept a check-book, as Ames did. and the cancelled checks and stubs have proved as damning to the reputation of French states men as those of Mr. Ames did to our own pnblic men. I High official, from President Carnot down," are more or less gravely enepectei of complicity in the iufamoufPanamaCanal scheme, by which thousands of frugal Frenchmen have been win died to the amount of $200,000,000. Mins isters, deputies, editors and epfcu lators are all charged with venality and corruption. M, Andrieux says he can prove that 104 mem bers of the Chamber have taken bribes ranging from 1,000 to 300,8 000 franc?, the total amount be ing 6,500,000 francs, "put where they would do the mo6t good ", to quote a phrase current in Credit Mobiler days. While it is always well to take political indictments of this sort with a grain of salt, it is especix ally necessary to sibieet thoee coming 3,000 miles to a good deal of the brine which does not pene trate the water-proof cable. Never theleps there seems to be enough foundation to M. Andrieux's threat to make the position of the Carnot Government extremely perilous The sudden revival ot activit in Bonapartist and Orleanist circles demonstrates that fact. Whenever the pretenders come forth, the Re public ia iD danger. The Bon' langists. too, shadows of a shade, have begun to assert themselves as residuary legatees of a bankrupt estate The enemies of France, which means every Tory, monarchist and reactionist, from London to Da homey, rub their hands in glco at this revelation of Republican cor rcption. Such ecandile, they say, are not exhibited under a mo. is archical government. That is true It is only in naturally healthy bodies that blood-poisoning makes . itself outwardly manifest Here in America we have be come accustomed to the sight of boils and rashes on the body poli tic. Viiting critics, from the days of Moore and Dickens to the present time, have pronounced each cutaneous disorder a case of fatal gangrene, when it was only a sign ot health revolting against disease. If France be suffering at the present moment from anything more dangerous than the moral measles and chickenpox through which our own country haB esfely passed, the evidence thereof has yet to be produced, The Panama Canal contractors may have been swindlers, but there is no evidence that M. DeLesseps and his im mediate associates were such. It will be time enough to blame the Government when some tangible vproofof its guilt is forthcoming. But come what may let the whole administration, from Presi dent Carnot down, be convicted of deliberate swindling the remedy lies not in the direction of Royalty, Imperialism or Anarchy. France herself is sound, honest, Industrie one, patriotic to hdr heartVcore. The Republic has sinned in per secutiDgits best friends, in striy Dg to abjhsh religion. It must pass the penalty, but not the dire penalty of reversion to abeolutiem in any form. This is the tragedy of France to day, ine tarce properly lollows, n the gnise f the Clcmenceau- Deroulede duel, which t( ok p'ace on the 22 inst. M Deronltde had publicly accused Mr.Clemencoau, Radical dtpnty and editor, of hav ng taken a bribe ot 80,000 francs from tlie Canal people, Clemen- ceau is a noted duelist, who h 8f killed his mm as the phrase goes. e is what id cs ldnt West, "a bad man."Achallenge was prompt lv iriven and accepted. Before going on the fi.-ld of '-honor,"' M. Deroukde pace etyeral Ucks ot his hair to aoirovrii g friends. M. Cknienceau called his editoral stbff together and embraced and kissed them while they wept in concert, not knowing if he would survive to greet them on the next pay day. Both deadly gladiators made their wills and sent ''proof- slips'' of their la6t dying woids to the dailv papers and Associated Press agency. Then they went to the fatal field, armed with the French duel ling pistol, which is almost as dan gerous as a pea-Bhooter. They were stationed 25 feet apart, and the word to fire was given. M. Clemenceau has the reputation of a "deaduhot." M. Djronlede fully expected to die. B th men were "pale but firm." They fired once, and missed. They fired a second and a third time, with the samo resul'; where upon their friends dec'ared that the honor of each was satisfied and further artillery practice would be a simple waist of powder and lead. Luckily the combatants had not chosen rocks or snowballs as wea pons, or somebody might have been injured. Mrs. Dt lia j Jones. Granville, N. Y. writes : "I havx. the highest praise to giye to Dr. Bull's Cough Svrup. From Tarboro Southerner, July While visiting Tarboro, on July 8th, I was requested to visit Miss Mary E fcjtaton, seven miles from t .wD, v ho .'or sevrn weeks ha.l been suffering excruciating agony from fome Mood po'Eon, supposed to be poison oak. On last Tuesday, at l.t r ri quest, I went to see her, and expected to see great suffering, but was n..t prej aicd for the set ne that met me. I found the patient broken out nii ov. r with an erup tion which had occasioned such intense itching that during the paroxysms she wa? perfectly uncontrollable, and had scratched and torn hf-rself to pieces until hi agony was indescribable. During these par oxysms she would ha-e tobehild, ard her screams could be heard a leng distance. She would pray for dpath to come to he relief; her whole b dy was nurplo nnr1 rav, exuded a y llow water which sat u rated the bed throi-gh several th cfc quilts that day she had pos;gt sstd I'.ersi 1!' of a thick gutta-percha cosnse comb, and before she could be prevented, had raked herself with it with such force as to breed out ome of the teeth, thus a dding to her agoDy, She was attended by some good physicians as Tarboro and her neighborhood could afford, but their treatment afforded only- occasional relief by outward applications, ,nd no permanent benefit, as the par oxysms continued to return with increas ing violence. Upon viewing the condition of the patient I called the family together and told them to bear w itness that I Pit. m- iskd soraiso. I could nt t tell whether my Remedy would relieve or not, as I had never even imagined such suffering, but it could do no harm ami might do good, then gave her a large dose of the Bitters and as soon as the paroxysm wrs over, sponged her whole body with the AVash. While doing so shi wou'd call cut, "Oh that does fejl so good" I then gave her another dose of the Bitters, and she was soon in a sweet sleep. I continued this treatment, and whenever the itching would reaur I would sponge the. body instantly with the A ash, which in every instance allayed in the irritation or inching and warde t oil those violent paroxeyms. She did not have an attack during the day, and by 4 o'clock on Wednesday afternoon the d'Fease was under perfect control. The itching would recur, t ut every time was allayed by the application of tl e Wash. 1 left her Wednesday easy and comfortable with directions for l he treatment to be con tinued during the night and as long as was necessary. I came again to see he to-d iy, Saturday, the 12th, and found n up and dressed and in the regular prose cution of her household duties. She is en tirely r lh ve ,alth ugh she wil',of course. have to t ike the Bilters some time to com p'etely eradicate the poison from hei blood. During Wt-dne: day she frequentby call for the Bitt'. rs, as she craved its socth ing and quit ting effects, and during the day I admhii.-tcred a whole bottie, with the above results, thus proving, what 1 have always claimed, that my Kerned y in an infallible antidote for all blood rrity. lam respectfully, M11S.
