signed as the primary cause of
the suicide of Frederick C.
Smith, 22 vears old, who lived
at 68 West . One Hundredth
street. He drank carbolic acid
last evening and died before an
arubnlance surgeon, who v as
summoned immediately, arrived.
Smith began smoking two

a hold on lnn that he smoked
incessantly, and for several
weeks smoked iu bed each night,
only falling into a doze for a few
hours in the early morning. ' In
an effort to break the habit he
abstained from smoking for a
whole day, bat he became "de
lerious and the family physi
cian adyisod that the reform be
accomplished gradu lly.
The young man, however, was
too weak to follow this course
and smoked more than' ever. Hf
was apparantly cheerful last
night at the prospect of return
ing to work to day. He went
out however, and bought some
carbolic acid. He told h's moth
er, with a smile, that, it was only
a little medicine. Then he went
into the parlor, closed the door
and swallowed the poison. His
father heard him groan, found
him and summoned assistance,
but in vain.

at the Hotel Konnon, in this city,
which, we are sure, will be glad
news to the travelling public who

numbers with their patronage,
Mr. Billingsis "one of the finest,"
and so is the Hotel Kennon and
now that the two have come to
gether, Goidsboro can well claim
the best hotel in the State.

The boat is too high to go under
the bridsre and the water is too
low to fill the channel that has
been cut under a "draw" in the
bridge ani the crew of the boat
are powerless to get beyond that

corps of engineer, with head
quarters in Wilmington, has been
notified of the predicament in
which the crew are placed, and
he in turn has notified the Board
of County Commissioners of
Wayne county that arrangements
must be made at once so the
boat can pass. To place a "draw
in the bridge will cost the county
something like f 1,000, and it is
aid that it will be very difficult
even to do this. The bridge as it
now stands has cost the county
the sum ef $3,750 and the Com
missioners are loatn to tear up
uch m valuable piece of proper
