A he large crowds that have been present at the municipal nom mating convention mis year is a source of gratification to every good Democrat, as is also the good feeling that has prevailed. There never was, perhaps. better list of names presented for the consideration of any mumcipa convention than those that were on the several tickets An election of the required num ber of any of the names presented would have given satistaction .The following are the names of the candidates from each ward FIRST WAED. Regular size 60 cts and ll. We are Jnerally liviug 111 a business age. None but business men succeed by their own efforts these days. Everything demands that strictly business principles be applied. The tendency of the times is to do away with every thing on the elaborate order and come down strictly to business The question of living has forced itself not to a question of how can we get the daintiest or the most fashionable to eat and to wear, but how can we manage to get along within ou- income. When the boy reaches the age to go to school it is not a question of finding out what educational institution can give him the most classical education, but to what school can he go where he can be best fitted to fight the battles of life and be independent. The school teacher who gets up the most practical method of teaeba rug, and a curriculum test suited to teach a boy what he needs to know to be a good business man, is the successful teacher. And this is true of all the professions and along all lines of business. The man who has good business sense and will usa it cannot be prevented from succeeding. In all ths professions and all lines of business there is always room up stairs, and the man who will use good judgment and per severance can get there. Such methods have character ized the business career of Mr. Asher Edwards, of this city, who has succeeded not only in mercan tile pursuus, as his constantly in- asing trr.de will show, but who has gained a wide reputation as a stock dealer, and is a farmer of no small pretensions. To all his pursuits he has ap plied purely business principles, and the success to which he has attained must be gratifying to him now in his ripening years, as well as to his many admiring friends. In business he is no less popu- ar with the public than he is with his more intimate friends at his hospitable home. By his keen rforesight and good judgment he has averted the financial reverses that come to a great many during the despondency of trade, and has at all cimes been able to supply the wants of his army of custom- ers, and lend tnem succor in the hour of need. Two million dollars will have to be raised by June 1 to pay the interest of the war debt. The income from the island is " not greater tnan $i.3uu,uuu per month, and the expense of war is more than f 11,000 000. It is believed that the Spanish Gov ernment, in view of the Graeco Turkish war, will be unable to borrow money from the powers. This is the reason for withdraw ing the troops. "I have watched ita effects in families where I have practiced and i find it admirable, both altrrative and tonic in its act'on, Dr. T. v, Mason, Macon, Ga. Washington, April 26, Com modore Hichborn, Chief Con bti uctor of the rfavy, has pre pared an interesting statement regarding the comparative size and effectiveness of the navies of Turkey aid Greece. He says: 'The Greeks have an effec tive naval force, consisting of three modern armored cruisers, the Hydra, built in St.. Nuziire in 1889; the Spetsai, built in Graville in 1889, and the Para, hnilt in fiiawilln in 1R90. , Thnvl UU11U X U m v a v " m w j are sister khips, with a displace ment of 4,845 tons and a record speed of 17.5 knots, with- 6,930 indicated horse power. Tby have a complete steel armor water line belt 11.8 inches th;ck amidships, tapering to '4.7 inches at the ends. The forward battery consisting of two 10 inch 36 calibre Canetguns and five 5-inch 36 -calibre Canet guns,; is pro tected by an armored casemate 13J inches thick, and on the after deck is one 10-inch dCUcahbr Canet gun in a barbette turret 13J and 11$ inches thick. They aiso mount one xz-pounaer eight 9-pounder, seven expound er, and sixteen 1-pounder rapid fire guns and three torpedo lubes. They are rigged as three masted schooners, with three tops.' Altogether they are very iormiaaoie vessels or their class. The second-class battle ship Maine is more nearly like these vessels than any other in the American Navy. They are fully as tffective as the Maine, bu would be no match for our first class batt.e ships of the Mas sachusetts- and Iowa type. In, addition to the fighting craft I have mentioned they have two old uonscUd sh:ps built about thirty years ago, of about 2,000 tons displacement wiih 7inch armor bets; one com posite gunboat of 1,800 tons; two steel gunboats oi 1,UUU tons each one of which is hued as a tran sport; four steel gunboats of 420 toiiS each, one torpedo depot ship of 1,100 tons; two gunboats of 440 cons each: six old iron gunboats of 380 tons each; eleyen first, class torpedo boats, "nd forty-five third-class torpedo boats. The Turkish navy consists only of two composite gunboats of 1,900 and 2 300 tons, respect ively; two wooden guaboats o 800 tons each, two steel torpe do gunboats of 900 tons eacti;a,nd one of 4o0 tons, two torpedo boat destroyers, twenty firsi-lass and fourteen seroed-class torpe- dj b )ats, and two submarine boats. They have on their navy fist thirteen obsolete ironclad ships, ranging in siza from 6,000 to 400 tons, and in age from .twenty five totbirtythree years, and eleven small wooden gun boats, some of which W-re built about forty years ago. The UreeKs nave no new ves sels under construction, but the Turks have taken a decided step in that direction. The lurkish vessels under construction are one first-class armored cruiser of 40,650 tons, designed for 17 knots speed, with 11,500 indicat ed horse power, having a 14 inch armor belt reduced to 7 inches at the ends, and carrying four llinch Krupp guns in 13a inch armored barbettes, acd six 5 iuch Krupr guns and ten rapid fire guns, two steel cruisers of 4.050 tons displacement, carry ing two 8 inch Krupp guns, six 5 inch and four 3-inch guns; aud two steel cruisers of 1,850 tons displacement, armed with six 6 inch Krupp guns. These vessels are being built in Turkey, and they have also under construc tion in Gaarden one torpedo gun boat of 900 tons displacement, "It is generally believed,"con tinued Commander , Hickboru, "that the Turkish navy has nad little intelligent supervision during the last decade, and that few, if any, of their older ships have any appreciable fighting value. All of tneir old ironclads were in existence and most of them were new and efficient uuring the Russo-Turkish war in 1877, but they performed very little real service then, though their navy at that time was vasts ly superior to that of Russia. The Turks have little natural love for the sea, and rarely en. gage in seafaring life. In their war with Russia they were easi Jy rattled and slow to take ad vantage of circumstances in their fa -or. "The Greeks are . naturally ifaring people. You will find them serving as sailors on most of the vessels in Mediterranean wa ters. It seems probable that the three Greek - armored cruisers I have mentioned are capable, if properly handled, of destroying the Turkish fleet. However, it is not likely that such destruction hours make one dav. You can't make any more ' out of them by the clock. 6.. : .out wise women, pro gressive women, can make each day worth twice as much to them. Just by using Pearline.
