One only has to view th exhibits at the Ncw bern Fair to be convinced that we fire in the midst of one of, the fin est, if not the very finest country on the facn of the earth. The Newbern Fair is allright, but the disorderly conduct allow ed on the special train going and coming will hereafter keep the la dies away who cannot make it con venient to go on the regular pas senger train, " If the State cannot secure any better management for . the road it should lease it to the Southern or some body who can run it as it should be. It makes no difference how good a country we have- how fertile the soil, bow health ful the climate, how bright the skies, without good government in North Carolina they will all amount to nothing. The white people are going to rule the State. Honest government will return. War talk is subsiding. Many of the young people are anxious, however, and their cry is for tvar. It makes no difference to them what course others may take, but as for them give thorn war, give them war. Well, the Argus, al ways ready to chronicle the fuc cess of the Goldsboro boys, stands ready to give the boys a big write up when they make their names famous "a tightin" the Spaniards in Cuba. The South is the most favored of all the different, sections of the Union. Ps one cheap staple, cot ton, has a commercial value greater tbau any other product of the soil in all the country combined. Its timber is limtless, its climate is genial and saiu brious, its deposits of coal and iron are vast beyond computa tion. Then how" foolish is your desire to leave a country thus blessed for the Klondvke and the NsrthPoIe. Stay a hinu and aid in its development. Within the memory of men: still ltviug the art of agriculture has been revo!u'ionz id, and from this it follows as a general proposition that profitable farm ing must be what rs known as intensive farming. By this is meant th 3 farming where every thing is made to count, and where ladin the most economic manner is brought right up to its maximum productive power. For this sort of farming not ev pry one is qualified; and thus it is that out of the very necessities of the case the standard for the farming class is being raised. 1! ... S-'-. wm The nhvsical existence of mankind is something like an account fr a ledger. Health on one side dis ease on the other. AU the pure air, good food, ra tional exercise and sound the account. It sums up health :and strength. On the other side, are tad air, poor food, overwork and worry. That foots up weakness and disease. When your appetite or sleep is disturbed; wh;n the stomach and liver are not work ing properly, or the bowels are not in regu lar condition; you are losing vitality and strength ; figures are going down on the wron? side of the ledger. Unless this is stopped and the other side of the account is built up, you'll soon be a physical bankrupt. The most profitable account a sick man can open in his L,edgir of Life is with Dr. .'ierce's Golden Medical Discovery, a wonderful and scientific tonic which im parts a direct and healthy stimulus to the entire nutritive organism. It strengthens the digestive fiuids and the liver, and en ables the bloo-Vraaking organs to produce pure, red, highly-vitalized blood. It is not a mere temporary exhilarator. It feeds the constitution with genuine, per manent power. It writes big, round sums on the health side of the account, and wipes out the figures of weakness and dis ease. It animates the vital forces and builds up healthy flesh, muscular energy nd nerve-force. For nearly 30 years Dr. Pierce has open chief consulting physician of the Invalids' Hotel and Surgical Institute, of Buffalo, N. Y. His formulas are everywhere recog nized as the most effective remedies in the world. His "Pleasant Pellets" are the most perfect and scientific cure for consti pation ever invented. They are not violent in their action, but perfectly sure, and at the same time comfortable. Their great reputation has called out a score of imi tations, which druggists sometimes try to substitute, but there ia nothing "fait as good." $100 Reward $100. The reader of this papers will be pleased to learn that there is at least one dreaded disease that science has been able to cure in all its stages and that is Catarrh. Hall's Catarrh Cure is the only positive cure known to the medical fraternity. Catarrh being a constitutional disease re quires a constitutional treatment. Hall's Catarrh Cure is taken inter nally, acting directly-ipon the blood and ameous surfaces of the system, thereby destroying the foundation of the disease, and giving the patient strength by b lilding up the consti tution and assxating nature in doing its work. Western Union bulletins to-day says: Spain has requested the re call of Consul General Lee from Havana and also that supplies for the Cuban patriots shall be sent in merchant vessels. The many people who have been impatiently awaiting starting news ever since the de struction of the batleship Maine are rejoiced at the present crisis and the inference is now that Spain will furnish Consul General Lee with passports and export him to his native soil. In the event of such rash proceedings tho present strained relations existing between our government and Spain will be drown to their utmost tension and a snap may be expected at any time. Clarke, 341 Shawmut Ave., Boston. m 1 t n jlo a large class oi persons the most fascinating piece of fiction that has yet come from American men of letters is Haw thorne's "bcarlet Letter." It is so because it is a profound psych ological study, a minute and un erring analysis of tho working of a soul possessed with pure and lofty ideas, yet weighed down and eaten away by remorse for terrible sin. The sin committed was indeed flagrant, and yet those who have not sinned asDimmesdale did can, nevertheless, in the writ ings of his soul, under its sense of quiet and tho desolating conflict within the breast between pure and lofty ideals and the degrading forces of sin, seo an image of what is daily transpiring in their own breasts. Ana have you ever thought in this connection what it is that leads to tho Book of Psalms? Why is it that man has at all times turned to this book to find a speech and language for all the varying moods f his soul? It is because one of the chief charac teristics of tho Psalms as a whole is that they are the outbreathings of the universal heart. And so with these words of St. Paul, He is telling us about his own inner life, and yet in do ing it he is describing yours and mine. He speaks oi his soul as a battle ground, "Not what I would that do I practise,' he says, but what I hate, that I do." How true that is to common hu man experience. And not only that, but one of the most pathetic features in human life grows im mediately out of the conflict that is going on in every human soul be tween thp good and the bad, the higher nature and the lower. Is there a reader of these lines who does not have deep down in his soul a hatred of lies and a roy eronce for truth? And yet there are many persons who feel all this to-day who to-morrow will lie and then be ashamed of it, and whOj will sweur they will not doitj again and straightway be betray ed into doing it, only to so around Hjjaiu .the fhuk' clr-i ( togi'-'. una tav -. .30, i.u ihrourU ' t hc-r i i u per petual struggle Jjoiog on ia an attempt to ' barmoniz 3 the ideal with the real and to bring the conduct up to the level of the law of God: in which the inward man discerns and in which he de lights. And this image haunts us aK ways. It is the ideal from which we have fallen and to which it is the word and effort of Christ to again conform us. This it is that creates the struggle, But notice now in St. Paul's account of this warfare the victory seems to be withthe forces of sin. He has a will to do that which ia good, but how to perform the good he knows not. He delights in God's law, after the inward man, but he is in captivity to the law of sin, so that the good he would he does not, and the evil that be would not, that he does. How human4t is and how common to man and yet how sorrowful. What wonder, then.that so many souls have found in St. Paul's words a yoice that expresses their own deep misery: "O, wretched man that I . am, who shall deliver me from the body of this death?" But ia that all this Scripture gives us? Has St. Paul no other speech , than that in which men can lament the victory of sin? Yes, yes-, close upon the heels of those despairing words sound the first notes of triumph: "I thank God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord!" And that brings us to a sec ond thing in our Scripture 'that the purpose of the Gospel is not so much to give man better prin ciples as it is to provide the strength to live up to them. Our principles are better than our practices. We delight in the law of God and disobey it. And so we coma to the la. thing. Yvo cco'in ibis Seriptu e why . , is i:.!-.
